About us

Institutional Banking & Markets (IB&M) provide institutional clients with solutions across the debt to equity capital spectrum, payment systems, risk management and other banking services. Our industry sector alignment, product capability, industry expertise and specialist skills are key points of differentiation to our global industry peers.

The Commodities and Environmental Markets (CEM) business within IB&M provides expertise in 3 core areas:

  • Risk management – helping customers manage exposure to price changes through derivative products
  • Inventory management and storage solutions – supporting clients with structured financing products (e.g. supply chain financing, repo) to access physical commodities and facilitate their transportation from production to consumption
  • Financing – providing clients with funding in the form of short term and/or self-liquidating debt (e.g. asset based loan, pre-pay, traditional trade finance)

CEM works closely with the Bank’s key industry coverage teams particularly within the Natural Resources & Industrial, Transport & Consumer sectors where clients have significant commodity exposures that need to be managed.

Picture yourself in the team

The CEM business plan focuses on aligning the business to focus on delivering a key product set to the Banks clients where we have a strategic advantage.

These clients may be producers, processors, traders or consumers of commodities, across metals, energy & agricultural products but also Central Banks, Financial Institutions & hedge funds.

Our objective is to be the preferred provider of commodity risk management and financing solutions to our clients. To achieve this we are focused on hiring the best people in order to bring a comprehensive understanding of commodity industries and markets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
