Overview

ABOUT THE JOB

Do you have the news-gathering instincts to lead coverage on a sector that touches every home, business, and community in the country? Do you want to pursue stories that don’t just track policy, but hold the public sector and industry leaders directly to account?

If you are hungry to set the daily agenda on one of the most critical and environmental issues of our time – waste, recycling, and the circular economy – this could be the role for you.

A rare opening has emerged at ENDS Waste & Bioenergy, a key title within the market-leading ENDS group of publications.

Working within ENDS

ENDS is the UK’s and Europe’s leading news and information service for environmental professionals. Through its specialist publications and digital products, ENDS provides trusted intelligence that helps professionals understand developments, navigate regulatory and market changes, and make informed decisions.

ENDS Waste & Bioenergy (EWB) is a market-leading publication serving professionals across the waste sector, providing timely news, analysis and insight into the issues shaping the industry.

The Role

The Associate Editor will lead the daily news coverage and be the face of the ENDS Waste & Bioenergy brand, producing high-quality original journalism for a specialist professional audience.

This is an exciting role for an ambitious news journalist looking to take ownership of a market-leading title. Combining hands-on reporting, editing, and industry networking, the Associate Editor will drive the daily news agenda, break exclusive stories, and build a strong personal and brand presence across the waste sector.

Alongside EWB, the role includes editorial oversight of Mineral & Waste Planning specifically, playing a key role in strengthening both publications' presence and profile across the industry.

Please note: To be considered for this role, please submit your Cover Letter setting out why you would be a good fit for this position and CV combined into one single PDF document. Applications submitted as multiple files may not be reviewed. Your application should be composed entirely of your own work and must not include content generated by artificial intelligence.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the daily news agenda for ENDS Waste & Bioenergy, writing, editing, and delivering high-quality, accurate, and original news and analysis
  • Develop original, off-diary stories and exclusive investigations into the key trends and issues affecting the waste sector.
  • Prepare and oversee the delivery of EWB's daily news bulletin and specialist editorial bulletins.
  • Host and develop the EWB Burning Issue podcast, including identifying, approaching and interviewing relevant guests.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders, industry leaders, decision-makers and other key contacts across the waste sector.
  • Attend relevant industry events, visit sites and engage with industry networks to develop market knowledge, identify stories and strengthen the publication's profile.
  • Work with EWB's editorial panel and wider industry contacts to gather insight and identify opportunities for relevant and impactful coverage.
  • Manage and support the Editor of Mineral & Waste Planning, ensuring the publication delivers high-quality, relevant and engaging editorial content.
  • Use audience analytics and other relevant data to understand reader interests and inform editorial planning and content development.
  • Use data and insights from EWB's Plant Tracker to uncover original news leads.
  • Monitor competitor activity, industry developments and emerging trends to maintain strong market awareness and identify opportunities to develop the brand.
  • Work collaboratively with subscription, marketing and other commercial teams to support audience engagement, brand development and subscriber growth.
  • Ensure all editorial content meets agreed standards of accuracy, quality, tone and style, and complies with relevant legal requirements.
  • Apply strong editorial judgement when commissioning, writing, editing, sub-editing and proofreading content.
  • Contribute to wider editorial initiatives and projects across ENDS and the broader business as required.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
