Job Description

Job Title: Associate Engineer - Platforms

Function: Infrastructure Services

Role Purpose

The Associate Engineer – Platforms supports the development, operation, and continuous improvement of enterprise platforms and infrastructure services. The role is designed to build foundational capability in platform engineering, including cloud technologies, automation, infrastructure as code, and operational support.

Working under the guidance of senior engineers, the apprentice will contribute to standardising infrastructure delivery, improving service reliability, and enhancing operational efficiency across the organisation.

Key Accountabilities

Platform Support and Engineering

  • Assist in the architecture, build, configuration, and maintenance of customer platforms and infrastructure services
  • Support the operation of cloud, virtualised, and on-premises environments
  • Contribute to platform improvements through standardisation and automation initiatives

Automation and Infrastructure as Code

  • Support development of automation scripts and tooling to reduce manual intervention
  • Assist with infrastructure-as-code implementations to ensure repeatable and consistent deployments
  • Contribute to configuration management and deployment processes

Monitoring and Operational Reliability

  • Assist in maintaining monitoring and alerting systems to improve service visibility
  • Support incident management and resolution activities under supervision
  • Contribute to improving platform resilience and reducing service disruption

Documentation and Standards

  • Assist with the development of and maintain technical documentation, including standard operating procedures
  • Support adherence to engineering standards, governance, and best practices
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for process improvement

Collaboration

  • Work with infrastructure, security, and application teams to support service delivery
  • Participate in team activities, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Engage with internal stakeholders to understand service requirements and operational challenges

Learning And Development Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured apprenticeship programme aligned to platform engineering or DevOps disciplines
  • Allocate approximately 20% of working time to formal learning activities
  • Apply learning in practical assignments within the team environment
  • Engage with mentoring and coaching provided by senior engineers
  • Participate in early careers development initiatives and peer learning forums

Person Specification

Knowledge And Skills (Essential)

  • Foundational understanding of IT infrastructure, networking, or cloud computing concepts
  • Demonstrated interest in automation, scripting, or software-driven infrastructure
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a structured team environment

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Level 3 qualification (e.g. T Level, Cambridge Technicals, or equivalent) in an IT-related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Any other IT Vendor certificates or exams would be beneficial

Knowledge And Skills (Desirable)

  • Awareness of cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)
  • Exposure to scripting languages (e.g. PowerShell, Python, Bash, C#)
  • Basic understanding of DevOps principles, CI/CD pipelines, or version control systems
  • Familiarity with monitoring or logging concepts

Working Arrangements

  • Remote-first working model with periodic in-person collaboration as required
  • Participation in team meetings, training sessions, and development activities

Career Development

This role forms part of the organisation’s long-term capability development in platform engineering. The apprentice is expected to progressively build technical competence and professional skills, with the objective of transitioning into a permanent engineering role within infrastructure, cloud, or platform engineering functions.
