Broad Overview:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Associate Engineering Manager provides operational leadership for the Engineering Maintenance function at the Wales Manufacturing site, ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of manufacturing equipment, utilities, and infrastructure.

The role supports the Engineering Manager in delivering departmental objectives while providing day-to-day leadership of engineering personnel, driving equipment reliability improvements, overseeing maintenance execution, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

As deputy to the Engineering Manager, the Associate Engineering Manager contributes to departmental strategy, resource planning, talent development, and operational excellence initiatives, while ensuring engineering activities remain aligned with cGMP requirements, health and safety regulations, and business goals.

As the Associate Engineering Manager your responsibilities will include:

Engineering Operations & Reliability

  • Support the Engineering Manager in leading the Engineering and Maintenance function to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant site operations.
  • Coordinate and oversee daily engineering and maintenance activities to maximise equipment availability and minimise operational downtime.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are planned, prioritised, and executed effectively through the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Lead initiatives focused on equipment reliability, asset lifecycle optimisation, and reduction of unplanned downtime through preventative, predictive, and condition-based maintenance strategies.
  • Support the development and implementation of maintenance strategies for critical manufacturing equipment, utilities, and facilities.
  • Monitor engineering performance metrics and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance compliance, and asset utilisation.
  • Ensure robust spare parts and critical inventory management processes are maintained to support business continuity.

People Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for engineering personnel.
  • Conduct performance reviews, development discussions, and competency assessments to support individual growth and departmental capability.
  • Support workforce planning, succession planning, and talent development activities within the Engineering Department.
  • Foster a high-performing, accountable, and engaged team culture aligned with SERB values.
  • Ensure all engineering personnel receive appropriate training and maintain required competencies in relation to safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and technical skills.

Compliance, Quality & Regulatory Support

  • Ensure engineering activities are performed in accordance with cGMP requirements, Good Engineering Practice (GEP), site procedures, and regulatory expectations.
  • Support regulatory inspections, customer audits, and internal audits relating to engineering systems and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure engineering documentation is maintained to the highest standards, including maintenance records, SOPs, deviations, risk assessments, change controls, and validation documentation.
  • Lead or support investigations into equipment failures, deviations, quality events, and maintenance issues using structured root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Ensure effective CAPAs are developed, implemented, and sustained to prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Promote data integrity principles throughout engineering systems and documentation practices.

Continuous Improvement & Digital Engineering

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement using Lean, Six Sigma, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance effectiveness, equipment performance, workflow efficiency, and cost management.
  • Support the optimisation and development of digital maintenance systems, CMMS functionality, and engineering reporting capabilities.
  • Use engineering performance data to identify trends, support decision-making, and improve operational performance.

Projects & Strategic Support

  • Support the Engineering Manager with departmental objective setting, resource planning, and strategic initiatives.
  • Manage and deliver assigned engineering projects, including equipment upgrades, facility improvements, and process optimisation activities.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, qualification, and validation of new equipment and systems.
  • Manage engineering contractors and service providers, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and site requirements.
  • Deputise for the Engineering Manager during periods of absence and undertake delegated managerial responsibilities as required.
