Purpose of Job
The Associate is to be considered a ‘subject matter expert’ (SME) in their field, with deep understanding of market practice, related policies/rules and typical governance structures and practices across 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines of defence teams. The individual will work with teams across 1-3 lines of defence to mould future operational procedures that ensure adherence to related screening frameworks and policies (including Sanctions, PEPs and adverse media screening), where necessary, influencing opinion and outcomes to deliver an appropriate ‘risk based’ approach that adheres to the EBRD’s risk appetite.
The team directly interfaces with Banking origination and Portfolio (front office) teams throughout key stages of the pre and post signing lifecycle. The team is expected to deliver accurate and timely screening of parties across a pipeline/portfolio of names using a combination of structured and unstructured data sources. This core control activity is a key step in ensuring adherence to our Integrity Due Diligence Guidelines, supporting the Bank’s broader adherence to its established risk appetite.
The Associate will work with the senior members of the team, including the Associate Director (AD) and Principals to represent the Unit and, where necessary, influencing a range of stakeholders across 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines of defence on areas that require SME knowledge and insight to market practice. Whilst day-to-day they will be focused on providing SME support to the team, they will also be expected to support assurance activity, providing comfort that analysts are adhering to policy and framework requirements. The individual will be expected to drive and deliver improvement initiatives off the back of this assurance testing and, where necessary, working with compliance teams to determine approaches that are both compliant and operationally sustainable.
Adopting a continuous improvement mindset will be important in enabling the function to be more sustainable into the future.

- Train newly hired colleagues around expected assurance standards and supervise their work to ensure high standards of work practices and objectives are met

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
