Associate Lecturer – Ship Handling

The Associate Lecturer – Ship Handling is a specialist practical teaching role for experienced maritime professionals who can combine operational expertise with effective coaching and instruction.

The role is particularly suited to serving and retired Marine Pilots and experienced Masters who want to share their knowledge, experience, and professional judgement with the next generation of maritime professionals.

Job Description

Ship Handling Training

  • Deliver practical ship-handling instruction using the SHC's fleet of manned ship models.
  • Instruct delegates in the principles and practical application of ship manoeuvring and handling.
  • Provide coaching and constructive feedback during practical exercises.
  • Adapt instruction to the experience and competence of individual delegates.

Simulation-Based Training

  • Support delivery of ship-handling exercises using mission/bridge simulation.
  • Integrate practical manned-model exercises with simulator-based learning where appropriate.
  • Contribute to debriefing and reflective learning following practical exercises.

The Associate Lecturer Will Be Expected To

  • Create a professional and supportive learning environment.
  • Relate theoretical principles to real-world maritime operations.
  • Share relevant operational experience and practical examples.
  • Encourage delegates to recognise risks, limitations, and human factors affecting ship handling.
  • Conduct effective post-exercise debriefs and provide constructive feedback.

The Role Is Particularly Suitable For

  • Serving Marine Pilots
  • Retired or recently retired Marine Pilots
  • Serving or retired Masters
  • Senior Deck Officers with extensive ship-handling experience
  • Maritime professionals with substantial experience of manoeuvring large vessels, pilotage, or complex ship-handling operations.

Candidates should have a strong practical understanding of ship manoeuvring and be able to communicate their knowledge effectively to experienced maritime professionals.

Previous teaching or training experience is desirable but not essential, provided the candidate has the appropriate operational experience and the ability to coach and communicate effectively.

Training and support in the SHC's teaching methodology can be provided.

The position is designed to provide flexible part-time employment alongside the candidate's existing professional commitments.

The Expected Requirement Is Approximately

  • 4–8 days per month during the main training season, February–December.

Specific dates will be agreed in advance according to the SHC training programme and the Associate Lecturer's availability.
