Associate Legal Counsel

As Associate Legal Counsel you will be a member of a busy broad-based legal insurance/reinsurance team providing general legal and regulatory assistance but with specific duties as set out below. You will support the UK & Lloyd’s business with involvement with Global colleagues. You will be operating in an exciting and dynamic environment with opportunities to learn about and support the business, working collaboratively with the established legal team as well as various stakeholders across the business, both in the UK and overseas.
What you’ll be doing
What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Partner with underwriters and teams across delegated authority, distribution, claims, wordings, compliance, conduct, and operations to deliver clear, practical legal advice.
- Advise on delegated underwriting and claims arrangements, distribution models, and related regulatory requirements across Company and Lloyd’s markets.
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and insurance agreements, including binding authorities, claims administration agreements, broker agreements, TOBAs, service agreements, NDAs, and endorsements.
- Develop specialist legal expertise in facilities, algorithmic underwriting, and other innovative distribution models—a cutting-edge and growing area for the UK business—supporting on complex structures, governance, contractual arrangements, and regulatory risk.
- Support product governance and conduct matters, including Consumer Duty, Product Oversight, and fair value.
- Support with outsourcing and service company arrangements.
- Lead and contribute to cross-functional projects, legal templates, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Use AI and other legal technologies responsibly to improve efficiency, insight, and the delivery of legal services.
- Represent Legal on internal committees.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the UK and internationally, building broad exposure to the business.
- Monitor legal, regulatory, and market developments, translating change into pragmatic guidance and opportunities for the business.
You will report to Head of Legal – Delegated and Distribution (UK & Lloyd’s).
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:
Required Skills and Abilities:
- UK legal qualifications essential – Law degree and qualified Solicitor or similar;
- Proven post-qualification legal work experience in a relevant field, insurance focus preferable;
- Excellent written and collaborative communication;
- Able to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;
- Ability to work in an international, multicultural environment within financial services;
- An ability to work independently and on own initiative whilst being part of a wider team, bringing energy and enthusiasm to collaborative working;
- Ability to prioritize conflicting needs and progress matters expeditiously, proactively, and follow through on projects to successful completion;
- A proactive approach to problem-solving with good decision-making capability.
