About the team you’ll be part of

The global communications industry is continuing to change at breakneck speed. As the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom is at the heart of a sector which not only impacts everyone’s lives but also plays a leading role in the UK economy.

The Research and Intelligence team is the source of critical information and insight within Ofcom, providing data and analysis on the communication industries. We sit within the Strategy and Research Group and provide first-class analysis and insight of the UK communications market, serving as the evidence base for Ofcom’s policy and regulatory work. We work collaboratively with other Ofcom teams and with external stakeholders to deliver Ofcom’s objectives. Our work includes leading the delivery of Ofcom’s annual Communications Market Report, Media Nations Report, and Online Nation Report, and advising on the development and analysis of consumer research surveys as well as new and innovative data sources.

The purpose and scope of the role

Associates in the Research and Intelligence team are empowered to display strong analytical skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively. They provide high quality analysis of communications market data, including leading pieces that shape Ofcom’s long-term thinking and strategy. The role includes drawing insights data and delivering high quality internal and external publications.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Manage Ofcom’s TV and radio data collection from industry stakeholders (public service broadcasters, multichannel services, and radio broadcasters) with careful attention to detail and strong stakeholder management.
  • Analyse large datasets to monitor TV industry trends and assess broadcasters’ compliance with quotas.
  • Source, analyse and interpret first- and third-party market data, ensuring that relevant insights and trends are understood and used to inform Ofcom’s projects and reports.
  • Contribute industry analysis for Ofcom’s flagship reports (e.g. Media Nations and BBC Annual Report).
  • Engage with a wide range of Ofcom projects and reports to ensure our policy work is evidence-based and reflects the latest industry developments.
  • Present analysis in a clear, concise, and easily accessible way using graphs, charts, well-written text and presentations to senior internal audiences.
  • Contribute to Ofcom’s content policy priorities as outlined in Ofcom’s Plan of Work and 3-year plan.
  • Work flexibly with your manager to provide relevant support to other emerging data collection and analysis needs across the team’s programmes of work.

The skills, knowledge and experience you’ll need for success

  • Data collection and analysis: ability to collect, quality assure, analyse and produce insights from medium-sized datasets using Microsoft Excel and preferably other software (e.g. Power BI, AI tools).
  • Media industry knowledge: interest in the TV and radio industries, including knowledge of key companies and emerging market developments.
  • Generating insights: use of evidence-driven methods to gather insights and make well-founded decisions based on thorough analysis.
  • Executing Plans: organising tasks and setting clear goals, managing resources wisely while considering progress.
  • Harmonising work: working effectively with others, creating an honest team environment and sharing valuable information and resources.
  • Forming relationships: build and nurture positive relationships with people inside and outside the organisation.
  • Articulating ideas: ability to express ideas, thoughts, and information in a clear and concise manner, ensuring messages are understood by everyone.
