Associate Mechanical Design Engineer (Building Construction)

Location: The successful candidate can be based from any of our offices in Sidcup, Blackfriars, Birmingham, Oxford, or Stevenage, with hybrid working available.

Hours: 8.30am to 5pm

Salary: DOE

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Associate Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing Building Services team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished mechanical engineer looking to take a leading role in the delivery of complex projects, manage and develop engineering teams, and help shape the future growth of a successful multidisciplinary consultancy. The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with leadership capability, client engagement, and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Lead the mechanical design of building services projects from concept through to completion.
  • Act as Lead Mechanical Engineer on projects of varying size, complexity, and value.
  • Prepare, review, and approve calculations, specifications, reports, schedules, and design drawings.
  • Deliver high-quality technical designs for HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, public health, and renewable energy systems.
  • Ensure designs comply with current legislation, Building Regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, and client requirements.
  • Promote innovative, sustainable, and low-carbon design solutions.
  • Undertake site inspections, condition surveys, and design review meetings.
  • Review contractor proposals, technical submissions, and commissioning documentation.
  • Coordinate design activities with architects, contractors, stakeholders, and other engineering disciplines.

Project & Client Management

  • Manage project programmes, deliverables, resources, and technical outputs.
  • Attend client, design team, and project meetings.
  • Ensure projects are delivered to agreed timescales, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Undertake technical reviews and quality assurance checks.
  • Support business development activities and maintain strong client relationships.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and manage a team of Mechanical Engineers and Technicians.
  • Mentor, support, and develop Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Technicians.
  • Conduct annual appraisals, probation reviews, and performance discussions.
  • Support resource planning and workload allocation across the team.
  • Lead recruitment activities, technical assessments, and interviews where required.
  • Assist engineers working towards Chartership and professional accreditation.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and high-performing team culture.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and membership of CIBSE, IMechE, or an equivalent professional institution.
  • Significant experience within a Building Services Consultancy environment.
  • A proven track record of leading mechanical building services projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of:
    • HVAC Systems
    • Heating Systems
    • Cooling Systems
    • Ventilation Systems
    • Public Health Engineering
    • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Experience producing and reviewing detailed mechanical engineering designs.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design software.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
