We have an exciting new opportunity for an Associate Mechanical Design Engineer interested in the development of renewable heat and thermal energy efficiency projects.

Our Carbon Shift consulting business is focused on the delivery of realisable climate action and net zero plans and is supported by delivery capability in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EV’s, smart buildings, and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed a strong expertise and client base around net zero and energy transition and is now moving to expand this offer into offering solutions to the broader climate adaptation and resilience challenge.

Role focus

This role will sit within the design engineering leadership team and will focus on steering the engineering and design development of commercial heat pump applications, HVAC systems improvements, and controls, working alongside electrical energy engineers and analysts to deliver low-carbon retrofit solutions.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in building services engineering and will have a keen appetite to help develop junior Engineers and pioneer low-carbon retrofits.

Key activities

  • Support the overall leadership of the team, maintaining a strong comradery, motivation, loyalty, and productivity amongst colleagues and peers
  • Oversee the preparation of design models, utilizing proprietary design software, such as AutoCAD, REVIT, and Navisworks
  • Lead the preparation of thermal energy simulation models, utilizing proprietary software, such as IES VE, Hysopt, and EnergyPRO (note work toward etc.)
  • Prepare calculations and engineering analysis for the purpose of validating simulation models, confirming systems design requirements, and performances
  • Lead market research to identify new and emerging technology / design innovations and assess suitability for application to projects
  • Support technical options appraisals to qualify / quantify best available techniques
  • Prepare design / functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes
  • Lead / contribute to Design Stage Reports and associated customer-facing documents
  • Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimize health, safety, and environmental risks associated with designs prepared
  • With support from colleagues, understand and account for applicable statutory, regulatory, and contractual requirements associated with design processes and outputs
  • With support from colleagues, understand and account for physical and environmental constraints associated with design processes and outputs
  • Where applicable, work alongside BIM specialists to provide relevant modeling/design information
  • Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys to support design processes
  • Interpret survey information from others and accommodate within design
  • Undertake technical support during construction and commissioning phases

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree (Bachelors or Masters) in a relevant engineering subject
  • Affiliation with an Engineering Council registered Institution
  • Working within a multidisciplinary design team on multimillion pound commercial MEP projects
  • Experience in the development and design of commercial and industrial HVAC systems between RIBA Stages 1 – 4
  • Working on heating, cooling, and ventilation plant design
  • An advanced level of understanding of building services (mechanical) design
  • Strong knowledge of British Standards, design guides, and the Building Regulations
  • Aware of health and safety and CDM regulations.
  • Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD and REVIT
