About The Role
We are seeking a Lead / Associate Principal Automation & Verification Engineer to join the Motor Test Systems Team. The role may be offered at Lead Engineer or Associate Principal Engineer level depending on the skills, experience and impact demonstrated by the successful candidate.
This is a highly technical, hands-on role focused on the design, development and continuous improvement of automated test systems used to support motor research and development activities.
The successful candidate will act as a technical expert in automation, control systems, instrumentation and test software, helping to develop new verification capabilities while supporting and mentoring less experienced engineers.
Working closely with the Engineering Manager, this role will play a key part in delivering complex test systems, improving laboratory capabilities and shaping technical solutions that enable efficient and reliable verification of Dyson technologies.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving challenging multidisciplinary engineering problems and developing practical, robust solutions that have a direct impact on engineering effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Automation & Test Systems
- Design, develop and commission automated verification systems and test equipment.
- Develop software for test automation, instrumentation, data acquisition and control applications.
- Improve existing test systems to increase capability, reliability, efficiency and maintainability.
- Lead the technical delivery of complex automation and capability improvement projects.
- Investigate and resolve challenging technical issues across software, hardware and instrumentation domains.
- Support the definition and implementation of effective verification methodologies.
- Support test execution as required
Software & Control Systems
- Act as a technical expert in LabVIEW development.
- Develop and maintain supporting applications using Python and C/C++.
- Design and implement control systems for automated test equipment.
- Integrate instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition hardware and control platforms.
- Contribute to software architecture decisions and promote good software engineering practices.
- Support code reviews, debugging activities and technical problem solving across the team.

Capability Development
- Identify opportunities to improve verification capability and laboratory effectiveness.
- Lead improvement projects from concept through design, implementation and deployment.
- Support the introduction of new technologies, tools and engineering approaches.
- Contribute ideas that improve team capability, efficiency and engineering quality.
- Support the specification, procurement and commissioning of new test equipment and laboratory capabilities.
Verification & Technical Analysis
- Support the planning and execution of motor verification and performance testing activities.
- Analyse and interpret test data to identify performance trends, opportunities and technical issues.
- Develop test methods and measurement techniques to improve the quality and effectiveness of verification activities.
- Support benchmarking and evaluation of competitor motor technologies.
- Work closely with motor, electronics and systems engineers to understand and investigate product performance.
Coaching & Mentoring
- Mentor verification engineers, graduate engineers, placement students and technicians.
- Support engineers in training through coaching, technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
Equipment & Laboratory Ownership
- Take ownership of strategic test systems, equipment platforms or laboratory capabilities.
- Support maintenance, calibration and lifecycle planning activities.
- Drive improvements to equipment reliability, usability and performance.
- Contribute to maintaining safe, efficient and effective laboratory environments.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience developing automated test systems within an engineering environment.
- Expert-level LabVIEW development experience.
- Strong experience developing software using Python and C/C++.
- Excellent understanding of automation, control systems and data acquisition.
- Experience delivering complex engineering projects from concept through implementation.
- Practical understanding of electronics, instrumentation and fault-finding.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
