Mackie Myers are partnering with a leading international drug discovery services organisation that supports biotechnology, pharmaceutical and research-focused companies in the development of novel therapeutics.
The business has established a strong reputation for scientific excellence, working across a broad range of therapeutic areas and providing specialist expertise to support clients throughout the drug discovery process. With continued growth and investment across its scientific functions, they are now seeking an Associate Principal Scientist to join their In Vivo Pharmacology team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a scientifically driven researcher to take on a highly visible role within a collaborative and client-focused environment, combining technical expertise, project leadership and client engagement while contributing directly to the advancement of innovative drug discovery programmes.
The Role
Reporting to the Associate Director of In Vivo Pharmacology, the Associate Principal Scientist will provide scientific leadership across complex client-sponsored drug discovery programmes, designing and delivering high-quality in vivo studies that support the progression of novel therapeutics towards the clinic.
The team is looking to appoint scientists with expertise in either Kidney Disease or Metabolic Disease. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external clients, the successful candidate will play a key role in shaping study strategy, interpreting data and acting as a scientific expert across multiple programmes.

Unlike traditional pharmaceutical environments focused on a single therapeutic pipeline, this position offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of client projects, providing broad scientific experience and significant opportunities for professional development.
Main Duties
- Lead the design, execution and interpretation of in vivo pharmacology studies across kidney and/or metabolic disease programmes.
- Act as Project Lead for client-sponsored studies, ensuring high-quality delivery against timelines and objectives.
- Provide scientific leadership and technical expertise across complex research programmes.
- Design study protocols, experimental strategies and research plans aligned to client requirements.
- Interpret and communicate scientific data, providing clear recommendations and next-step strategies.
- Collaborate closely with internal multidisciplinary teams and external clients throughout project delivery.
- Support client interactions, study discussions and scientific presentations.
- Drive innovation through the implementation of new technologies, models and experimental approaches.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance departmental scientific capabilities.
- Support, mentor and develop junior scientists within the team.
- Ensure studies are conducted in line with relevant regulatory and ethical standards.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously within a fast-paced commercial research environment.
The Successful Candidate
- PhD in a relevant Life Science discipline with industry or postdoctoral drug discovery experience, or BSc/MSc with significant industrial experience.
- Strong expertise in Kidney Disease or Metabolic Disease research is essential.
- Experience applying in vivo pharmacology models within a drug discovery environment.
- Industrial experience within a CRO, biotechnology or pharmaceutical organisation.
- Strong understanding of study design, execution and data interpretation.
- Knowledge of UK regulations and best practice relating to in vivo research.
- Proven project leadership experience with the ability to manage multiple programmes concurrently.
- Excellent communication skills with confidence presenting scientific findings to clients and stakeholders.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving capabilities.
- Experience mentoring, coaching or supporting junior scientists would be advantageous.
- A genuine passion for kidney disease or metabolic disease research and translational science.
