About the role
We are looking for a developing engineer or project professional who wants to build a long-term career in Rotating Machinery. Working within the West Area Rotating Machinery team, you will support the safe and successful delivery of projects involving compressors, gas generators, power turbines, auxiliary systems, controls and electric-drive machinery across a high-hazard gas transmission environment.
This is a genuine development role. You do not need to arrive as a finished rotating machinery specialist or an experienced project manager. You will be supported to strengthen both your technical understanding and your ability to plan, govern and deliver projects through their full lifecycle.
Why this role matters
This role offers the opportunity to build technical, project delivery and stakeholder management expertise while contributing to the successful delivery of critical infrastructure projects across National Gas's transmission network.
What you'll be doing
- Support designated rotating machinery capital projects from early definition and optioneering through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, handover and close-out.
- Work alongside project managers, rotating machinery engineers, operations teams, site teams, commercial colleagues, design organisations, OEMs and specialist suppliers.
- Help develop clear scopes, delivery plans, schedules, cost forecasts, risk registers, action trackers and monthly project updates.
- Coordinate technical and project information, ensuring decisions, assumptions, dependencies, changes and approvals are visible and controlled.
- Participate in design reviews, technical queries, factory or site inspections, test activities, commissioning readiness and asset acceptance.
- Support contractor coordination and monitor delivery against safety, quality, programme, cost and technical requirements.
- Build practical knowledge of gas turbines, gas generators, power turbines, centrifugal compressors, electric-drive systems and associated auxiliary and control systems.
- Capture lessons learned and contribute to standardisation, innovation, design optimisation and continuous improvement across the machinery portfolio.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
