About Ranvier
Ranvier.ai is building a multimodal neurological inference platform for the objective measurement, early detection, and longitudinal management of depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease. Depression today is diagnosed through self-report and questionnaires. We are building physiological measurement into that picture, so that clinicians and patients have a measured signal where currently there is only what someone is able to describe. We are an early-stage team, which means this work sits close to the science and to the people doing it. Ranvier is at development stage. Our work is subject to research, validation, regulatory, and commercial milestones.
The role
We are looking for an undergraduate or recent graduate to support hands-on research into objective measurement in mental health. You will work alongside our research team on novel approaches to the assessment of depression, contributing to study set-up, data collection, literature review, and analysis. The work is supervised throughout, and there is no expectation that you arrive already knowing how to do it. You will report to our Scientific Lead, and you will be working with a team spanning neuroscience, clinical practice, and data science. This is an unusual place to start a research career. Objective measurement in mental health is a field that is forming now, and most of the interesting questions in it are still open.
What you will do
- Support the design and running of research studies, including participant sessions
- Carry out literature searches and summarise findings for the team
- Prepare, clean, and organise study data
- Build study documentation, protocols, and presentation material
- Contribute to work intended for peer-reviewed publication
- Maintain accurate records that support our validation and regulatory processes

What we are looking for
- Strong written and verbal communication, including with research participants
- Confident with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Scientific literacy and a careful, methodical approach to data, including basic statistical reasoning and data cleaning
- Real interest in mental health research and in how depression is currently assessed and diagnosed
- Willingness to conduct sensitive conversations with participants about depression and low mood, with training, protocols, and supervision provided
- Studying, or recently graduated in, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biomedical science, data science, or a related field
Useful but not required
- Previous lab, clinic, or research assistant experience
- Familiarity with clinical assessment instruments used in depression research
- Data handling in Python, R, or advanced Excel
What you will leave with
- Practical experience of writing and running research protocols
- Exposure to clinical assessment instruments and to how measurement work is run under regulatory constraint
- Research data handling discipline that transfers directly to postgraduate study
- Named supervision and a reference from a working research team

Practicalities
Location: Bristol, with the option to work from UWE campus. [DECIDE] arrangements considered.

Right to work: You must have the right to work in the UK. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship at this stage. If you hold a student visa, please note the standard term-time working limit of 20 hours per week and check your own eligibility.
Research governance: Studies run under approved research ethics protocols with named supervision.
Confidentiality: The role involves participant data. You will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement and to work to careful data-handling standards throughout.
