The Opportunity

We're looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join our Digital Solutions team, where you'll design, develop and support AWS-based APIs that power our B2B EDI solutions. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges, working across the full software development lifecycle, and contributing to scalable, resilient solutions in a collaborative environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Develop, maintain and support Java-based services and APIs that power business-critical B2B integration solutions.
  • Design, build and operate high-scale, fault-tolerant, low-latency microservices within a cloud-native AWS environment.
  • Work across the entire software development lifecycle, from solution design and development through to deployment, monitoring and ongoing support.
  • Contribute to event-driven architectures and distributed systems, ensuring services remain reliable, scalable and maintainable.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product teams and business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Improve existing applications, services and engineering practices through continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code deployments.
  • Participate in agile ways of working, delivering frequent, iterative releases directly to production.
  • Support monitoring, troubleshooting and performance optimisation activities to ensure a high-quality customer experience.

Essential

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum of 1 year's experience in software engineering, or a relevant qualification covering core software development principles.
  • Experience creating and maintaining Java-based applications or services.
  • Understanding of HTTP-based services, APIs and microservice architectures.
  • Experience working with relational and/or non-relational databases.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms, ideally AWS.
  • Experience working with distributed systems and concepts such as eventual consistency.
  • Understanding of Continuous Integration and source control using Git-based platforms.
  • Experience with at least one dynamic programming language such as JavaScript or PHP.
  • Knowledge of software testing practices including unit testing, integration testing and security considerations.
  • Willingness to contribute to frontend development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript when required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose issues at both code and platform level.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A proactive, positive approach with a strong team-oriented mindset.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
