We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world’s most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.
Role Description
Our Wastewater network modelling team is looking for an Associate Technical Director to join the team to help lead the delivery of hydraulic modelling for primarily UK Water Company and other clients. The work is primarily focused on supporting the delivery of the WINEP drivers for CSO improvements but also includes DWMPs, catchment growth, flooding, and pollution.
This work will contribute to the significant clean-up of watercourses, beaches, and the marine environment planned for the next 15 years by the UK Water Industry by addressing intermittent overflows using a blend of engineering interventions increasingly focused on SuDS and other measures to reduce and control the inflows to the foul and combined wastewater networks. The work will involve managing the cross-over from conventional urban wastewater modelling to the inclusion of SuDS retrofit schemes. The role offers an opportunity to influence the direction of projects in this important and publicly aware area of work.
The candidate will need to have proven capability of delivering wastewater modelling projects from scoping to Concept Stage and supporting engineers through the design and delivery stages. The successful candidate will provide dynamic technical leadership, coordination, and the identification of efficient solutions through collaborative value engineering techniques. The role will require a full understanding of the limitations of the techniques used to inform the client of the compliance risks that implementation of a given solution will bring. The candidate will need to have proven client management skills, the ability to help build and manage the technical support team and oversee technical outputs. They should have a practical understanding of commercial and contract management, and experience of delivering large projects/programmes of work. The role necessitates the ability to work effectively across organisational boundaries, both internally and externally to Arcadis, and offers a pathway towards senior management positions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
