Associate Trustees
Associate Trustees support the Board in ensuring the charity is well governed, financially sustainable, and operating in line with its charitable objectives. The role is designed to provide development opportunities for individuals who wish to gain experience in charity governance.

Fusion Maidstone is a community-focused charity and healthy living centre based in Park Wood, one of the most deprived areas in Maidstone. We exist to reduce health inequalities, improve wellbeing and strengthen community connection. Through a blend of drop-in support, social programmes, youth and family activities, community events and accessible facilities, Fusion offers a safe, welcoming hub for local people. Our work is practical, people-centred, and deeply grounded in the needs of the community we serve.

Fusion acts as a bridge between individuals and statutory or voluntary support they need, offering guidance, connection, and an open door.
By becoming an associate trustee you will bring insight and experience to the board to help shape the next stage of the charity's development. If you have particular skills, i.e. marketing, you will be able to fully contribute to the charity's marketing strategy.
What are we looking for?
Most important to Fusion is that associate trustees have a commitment to the charity's purpose and values, a willingness to learn about charity governance and trustee responsibilities, the ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively, have good judgement and a strategic mindset, and are reliable with a willingness to dedicate time to meetings and preparation. It would also be beneficial but not essential to have experience in areas such as fundraising, finance, HR, legal, marketing, digital, community engagement, or lived experience relevant to the charity's work, previous volunteering, leadership, or committee experience, and an interest in progressing to a full trustee role in the future.

An associate trustee is expected to act in the best interests of the charity at all times, respect confidentiality and collective decision-making, champion inclusion, transparency, and accountability, and uphold the charity's policies and governance standards.
What will you be doing?
As an associate trustee, you’ll have an essential role in contributing towards the future direction of Fusion Maidstone and making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable residents in Park Wood and the wider Maidstone area. Park Wood is ranked amongst the top 5% most deprived areas nationally on the IMD with two LSOAs falling in the top 2%. Residents experience significant health inequalities that contribute to poorer health outcomes and reduced life expectancy.
The charity’s 3-year strategic plan has a strong focus on the growth of the charity together with a passion to help more vulnerable people in more ways. During the coming year, we will focus on securing funds to make the charity more robust and resilient along with developing new programmes and activities to address identified need.

For this reason, we are looking for associate trustees who can contribute their skills, insight, and enthusiasm to the charity. The associate trustee role is suitable for those who wish to have a steer in the charity’s strategic direction while gaining valuable experience in charity governance. This role is designed to provide development opportunities. No previous trustee experience is required. There will be a full induction process and training programme as part of this role. We are keen to hear from local people who can bring the voice of the people to the board. There is a progression pathway to becoming a full trustee on Fusion’s board.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get more involved in helping shape the future of the charity, gain experience in charity governance, and work alongside our board of trustees. It is designed to be a supportive development role, giving you the chance to learn more about what being a trustee involves while making an even greater impact.
This role is particularly important over the next year as Park Wood and adjoining estates will be receiving substantial government investment through the Pride in Place programme. Pride in Place is a neighbourhood-led project, so associate trustees will play a vital role by bringing insight to the senior management team to ensure all bids for funding are well informed.
Our board has a close relationship with our senior management team, and prides itself on being very friendly and relaxed. We also have a sub-committee that provides direction on our growth, so there are lots of opportunities for associate trustees within the organisation.
