Your Role
At Co-op Academy Stoke on Trent, we are dedicated to creating a positive and healthy learning environment for all students and colleagues. The Attendance Improvement Officer plays a key role in improving attendance for students who are at risk of persistent or severe absence. The role has a strong focus on targeted intervention and case management, taking ownership of identified students and working directly with them and their families to understand the barriers affecting attendance and put effective support in place.
Using attendance data, patterns and contextual information, the Attendance Improvement Officer identifies emerging concerns early and ensures that intervention is timely, purposeful and proportionate. This includes regular contact with families, home visits, attendance meetings, individual support and action plans, reintegration following periods of absence, and close monitoring to ensure that intervention is having a measurable impact. Where attendance does not improve, cases are escalated appropriately and in line with the academy’s attendance procedures and statutory expectations.
A central part of the role is building strong, professional relationships with students and their families. The Attendance Improvement Officer works alongside parents and carers to identify and remove barriers while maintaining clear expectations around regular attendance and parental responsibility. They work closely with Heads of Year, Behaviour, SEND and Safeguarding colleagues to ensure that students with additional needs or vulnerabilities receive coordinated support, rather than attendance being addressed in isolation.
The role also provides an important link between the academy, families and external agencies. Where barriers are complex, the Attendance Improvement Officer contributes to multi-agency working and ensures that attendance concerns are considered alongside wider safeguarding, SEND and family needs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
