Senior Technical & Compliance Manager
Salary: £70,000 - £80,000 per annum
About Us
We are recruiting for a Senior Technical & Compliance Manager to join a growing accountancy and business advisory practice in Manchester.
This is a senior-level opportunity for an experienced audit, compliance and quality professional to take ownership of regulatory compliance, technical audit monitoring and the firm’s quality management framework. The role will work across multiple service lines and offices, supporting partners, directors and senior teams in maintaining high professional standards and ensuring compliance with regulatory and audit requirements.
The position would suit a technically strong ACA or ACCA qualified professional with significant practice experience, strong knowledge of audit quality standards and a background in compliance, risk, file review or technical audit monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Lead compliance with ICAEW practice assurance and audit regulatory requirements
- Manage preparation, responses and follow-up actions for regulatory monitoring visits
- Own and develop the firm’s quality management framework under ISQM 1 and ISQM 2
- Support the annual evaluation of the system of quality management
- Monitor updates from HMRC, ICAEW, FRC and other regulatory bodies
- Assess regulatory changes and communicate the impact to partners, directors and wider teams
- Maintain and update compliance manuals, policies and procedures
- Track regulatory correspondence, findings, action plans and remediation activity
- Design and operate the firm’s technical audit monitoring programme
- Carry out audit file reviews, thematic reviews and quality inspections
- Report on audit monitoring outcomes, including trends, root causes and recurring issues
- Develop audit technical guidance, templates and working paper standards
- Liaise with audit teams regarding monitoring findings and remediation actions
- Act as a key point of contact for ethics, independence and professional standards queries
- Manage independence policies, conflicts procedures and related compliance registers
- Support compliance with tax adviser registration requirements
- Maintain and update audit methodology and technical resources
- Assist with technical audit queries across the firm
- Support the implementation and development of audit technology platforms
- Assist with the integration of compliance policies and systems following acquisitions
- Design and deliver compliance and technical CPD training
- Prepare compliance alerts, guidance notes and policy summaries
- Report regularly to senior leadership on compliance, quality and regulatory matters
- Contribute to firm-wide quality improvement and risk management initiatives

Requirements
- ACA, ACCA or equivalent professional qualification
- Significant post-qualification experience within an accountancy practice environment
- Experience in a compliance, risk, technical audit or quality management role
- Strong working knowledge of ICAEW practice assurance and audit requirements
- Strong understanding of ISQM 1 and ISQM 2
- Experience carrying out technical audit monitoring or audit file reviews
- Ability to identify findings, complete root cause analysis and drive remediation
- Sound knowledge of ICAEW Code of Ethics, ethical standards for auditors and PCRT obligations
- Strong working knowledge of ISAs UK, FRC audit quality standards and regulatory expectations
- Experience preparing clear technical guidance on complex regulatory matters
- Confident advising and constructively challenging partners, directors and senior colleagues
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail and strong professional judgement
- Pragmatic, solutions-focused and commercially aware approach
- High degree of integrity, discretion and professionalism

Previous involvement in delivering compliance training or CPD would be desirable
