Overview

We are seeking an experienced External Audit Manager to join a mid-tier practice firm. This role offers the opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of clients, lead and develop audit teams, and play a key role in delivering high-quality audit and assurance services to owner-managed businesses, SMEs, and larger corporate clients. Key Responsibilities

Audit & Client Delivery

  • Manage a portfolio of external audit clients across a range of sectors
  • Plan, manage, and complete audit assignments in line with UK GAAP, IFRS, and ISA (UK) standards
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, building strong and trusted relationships
  • Review audit files and financial statements, ensuring high technical and quality standards
  • Identify and communicate audit findings, risks, and value-added recommendations to clients

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop audit seniors and trainees
  • Allocate work effectively and manage team performance and workflow
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and support to support career development
  • Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, and training initiatives as required

Commercial & Practice Contribution

  • Monitor budgets, manage recoveries, and ensure assignments are delivered profitably
  • Support partners with client proposals, tenders, and business development activities
  • Keep up to date with technical and regulatory developments and share knowledge with the team
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of audit processes and methodology

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • ACA / ACCA qualified (or equivalent)
  • Strong background in UK external audit within a practice environment
  • Experience managing audit engagements and leading teams
  • Solid technical knowledge of UK GAAP, IFRS, and auditing standards
  • Excellent communication and client relationship skills
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities

  • Experience working with mid-market or owner-managed businesses
  • Exposure to a range of sectors (e.g. financial services, not-for-profit, technology, manufacturing)
  • Experience supporting business development or proposal work
