Automated Paint Technician - ABB Robots
Birmingham, West Midlands
Salary: Up to £45k, depending on experience + generous benefits
Our Birmingham-based client originated more than half a century ago and is recognized as a market leader in their niche sector for supply to a diverse range of clients and industry sectors throughout the UK. As a result of continued success and an ongoing program of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced Automated Paint Technician with proven ABB robot systems experience to complement their established and highly professional production team and support, maintain, and improve the automated paint operation.
About the Role
As an Automated Paint Technician, you will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and supporting ABB IRB 5510 automated paint robots. Your core duties will include:
- Operate, maintain, and support ABB IRB 5510 automated paint robots.
- Carry out robot program adjustments and optimization to improve paint coverage, quality, and cycle time.
- Mix and prepare paints accurately to the required specifications and ratios.
- Measure and adjust paint viscosity where required.
- Prepare paints, thinners, hardeners, and other materials in line with technical specifications.
- Ensure correct paint batches, colors, and materials are used for production.
- Troubleshoot paint mixing, application, and robotic process issues.
- Identify and resolve paint quality problems including coverage, color, film build, appearance, runs, and consistency.
- Monitor and adjust paint application parameters to maintain a stable process.
- Support color changes, paint line changeovers, and cleaning/flushing activities.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and basic robotic system checks.
- Assist with new product introduction and development of paint programs for new components.
- Adjust robot paths, speeds, spray parameters, and application settings where required.
- Work closely with Engineering, Maintenance, Production, and Quality teams to resolve recurring issues and support C.I activities aimed at reducing paint waste, downtime, and defects, whilst ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with HSE requirements.
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation, robot programs, and paint process settings.

Requirements
- Demonstrable hands-on experience with ABB IRB 5510 paint robots.
- Strong practical experience in paint mixing, preparation, and paint process control.
- At least 3 years' experience gained working within an automated industrial paint environment.
- Skilled in fault-finding on automated paint and robotic equipment.
- Good understanding of robotic paint application and spray processes.
- Ability to make robot program and process adjustments in a fast-paced environment.
- Previous knowledge or experience of ABB TR is distinctly advantageous.
- Previous experience as an Automated Paint Technician in a similar fast-paced environment.
