About the Role

We are looking for someone to make a real difference to how Retronix Semiconductor operates. That means replacing manual effort with automation, bringing our systems up to the pace of the business, and turning our data into reporting that people can act on.

This is a hands-on role. You will design, build and ship solutions that have a visible impact on how the business runs. You will work closely with Finance, Operations and leadership to find where the biggest gains are, and with external technology partners where a project needs extra expertise.

You will build on a shared internal platform, so that each new solution adds to what already exists rather than becoming another standalone system.

We want someone who is technically strong and commercially minded, and who cares as much about how the business runs as about building software that people genuinely use.

Process automation and operational excellence

  • Find the manual processes that create cost, risk or delay, and remove them.
  • Build automation that is reliable and well documented, and that keeps running without constant attention.
  • Work with teams in Scotland, Ireland and the US to understand how they work, test what you build, and make sure it actually gets used.
  • Treat documentation and handover as part of the job, so what you build stays maintainable after you move on to the next thing.

Reporting and data visualisation

  • Work with Finance, Operations and leadership to build Power BI dashboards and reports that show how the business is really performing, accurately and on time, across all our locations.
  • Bring order to our data by connecting sources that currently sit in separate silos, and producing figures people can trust.
  • Build custom reporting tools where a standard BI platform is not the right fit.

Systems and Microsoft 365

  • Keep a clear picture of our business systems and how they connect to each other and to our processes, and bring good judgement to what we keep, replace or integrate.
  • Get more from Microsoft 365, including SharePoint, Teams and Entra ID, and integrate solutions through the Graph API.
  • Give early warning when a system update or vendor change could affect our operations, and help the business adjust with as little disruption as possible.
  • Be the technical lead on business systems and help bridge the gap between technical and non technical staff.
  • Contribute technical input to decisions on our core business systems.
  • Build solutions with security and access controls that match how sensitive the data is, including confidential client and programme data held under NDA.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

AI and innovation

  • Apply AI and machine learning where it solves a real operational problem, such as anomaly detection, forecasting, document processing or predictive analytics, mainly within our Microsoft and Azure environment.
  • Take ownership of the AI tools we already have, and develop them further as the business needs more from them.
  • Run AI workloads responsibly: monitor cost, performance and accuracy, maintain proper logging, and put controls in place that pause a tool automatically if it starts behaving unexpectedly.
  • Keep clear documentation of what each tool does, what data it uses and who owns it, and review colleagues' work before it goes live.
  • Keep a practical, commercial view of what is happening in AI, and advise on what is worth adopting and when.

Partner and project collaboration

  • Help internal teams scope new work by turning a business problem into clear technical requirements, agreeing what success looks like, and setting realistic expectations on time and effort.
  • Manage external technology partners where we use them, and contribute technical detail and cost estimates to business cases and funding bids.
  • Act as the link between the technical work and the people who depend on it, keeping both sides informed and raising problems early.

Person specification

Essential

  • Two to five years in automation, software engineering or a systems or data role, including automation you took into production that solved a real problem and is still in use
  • Strong Python or JavaScript, enough to build complete, production-ready applications on your own
  • Good Power BI skills: data modelling, DAX, combining multiple sources, and dashboards people actually use
  • Working knowledge of Azure services (such as App Service, Functions, Storage and Key Vault) and Microsoft 365
  • Able to explain technical work in plain language without dumbing it down

Desirable

  • Data warehousing and semantic modelling, so each core metric has one agreed definition
  • Microsoft 365 integration through the Graph API, and API gateway or Azure API Management patterns
  • LLMs or ML models in production, including LLM APIs, streaming responses, conversation state and cost tracking
  • AI and LLM frameworks such as Haystack, LlamaIndex or Semantic Kernel, vector databases and RAG
  • Front-end skills in HTML, CSS and JavaScript for internal tools
  • Managing technical projects with internal teams and external partners, holding quality on both sides
  • GDPR as it applies to automated processing and AI, ideally across more than one country; awareness of ISO/IEC 42001
  • Role-based access control and data classification built into delivered solutions
  • Enterprise HR, payroll, billing or ERP systems and the processes they support
  • ISO 9001 or ISO 45001 quality environments
  • Contributing to innovation or digital transformation funding bids
