About The Role
The Automation Engineer role at Amazon TA is pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation of automated systems within our fulfillment centers across London. This position involves monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining a variety of automation equipment, including conveyors and sortation systems, to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime. The role requires frequent travel between regional sites within London, approximately 50% of the weekly time, to support various locations and collaborate with cross-functional teams. As part of the Reliability Maintenance Engineering team, you will be at the forefront of deploying emerging technologies and implementing continuous improvement initiatives that directly impact our ability to meet customer demands with speed and accuracy.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess an engineering degree or equivalent qualification such as a Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), BTEC National Diploma, NVQ levels III/IV/V in Engineering Manufacture, or a fully accredited apprenticeship with relevant follow-up qualifications. Proven experience in PLC-controlled automation systems within a continuous process or production environment is essential. Familiarity with supporting a wide range of conveyors and sortation systems is required. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory.

Preferred qualifications include experience with tools such as Microsoft Office, project management software, EPLAN, Ladder Logic, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys PLCs, Ignition SCADA, Human Machine Interface (HMI), EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus, AS-i networks, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), safety gateways, and input/output devices. Certifications in engineering or automation are advantageous, as well as experience working with fieldbus networks and safety systems.
Responsibilities
As an Automation Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing critical automation systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Working closely with the EU Controls network to oversee Material Handling Equipment (MHE) metrics, providing data visualizations and insights to internal stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Leading or actively participating in continuous improvement projects, identifying opportunities to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
- Collaborating with various departments to ensure all systems are accurately documented and backed up, maintaining comprehensive libraries for troubleshooting and recovery.
- Supporting the installation and commissioning of new equipment in coordination with global colleagues, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
- Interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings and developing strategies for system improvements in compliance with IEC 61131-3 standards.
- Providing technical guidance and training to engineering technicians, fostering a culture of proactive maintenance and troubleshooting excellence.
- Supporting other sites within the EU Controls network as needed, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork.
- Working during designated shifts, including nights and early mornings, to minimize operational disruption.
