About The Role
We are seeking a dedicated Automation Engineer to join our Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) team. This role is pivotal in maintaining and enhancing the performance of our automated systems across multiple regional sites within London, with approximately 50% travel required between locations. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing key automation systems such as conveyors, sortation systems, and material handling equipment. The position offers an exciting opportunity to work with innovative technology, including PLC-controlled automation, human-machine interfaces, and networked control systems, to optimize operational efficiency and reduce downtime.
As a site expert, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, support continuous improvement initiatives, and contribute to the installation and commissioning of new equipment. Your expertise will directly impact our ability to deliver exceptional service to our customers by ensuring our automation infrastructure operates seamlessly. This role requires a proactive problem solver with strong technical skills and the flexibility to work during non-standard hours to minimize operational disruption.

Qualifications
- Proven experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis in a continuous process or production environment.
- Engineering Degree in UK Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), BTEC National Diploma and Certificate (OND/D), NVQ III/IV/V in Engineering Manufacture, or a similar accredited qualification.
- Experience supporting a wide range of conveyors and sortation systems.
- Fluent in English, with excellent communication skills for documentation and stakeholder interaction.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Familiarity with developing improvement strategies in compliance with IEC 61131-3 standards.
Preferred qualifications include experience with tools such as Microsoft Office, project management platforms, EPLAN, Ladder Logic programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys PLCs), Ignition SCADA, HMI systems, EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus, fieldbus networks, VFDs, safety gateways, and input/output devices.
Responsibilities
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and perform repairs on automated control systems and equipment to ensure optimal operation.
- Collaborate with the EU Controls network to oversee Material Handling Equipment (MHE) metrics and performance.
- Create and deliver data visualizations and troubleshooting reports to internal stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement projects aimed at enhancing automation processes and reducing downtime.
- Maintain accurate documentation of systems, including backup libraries and technical manuals.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning, and testing of new automation equipment across sites.
- Support other regional sites within the EU Controls network as needed, providing technical expertise and troubleshooting assistance.
- Interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, developing strategies for system improvements and code enhancements.
- Train and mentor engineering technicians to ensure proper troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and system documentation practices.
