Job Description
Customer / Business
- Analyse a broad range of business requirements and processes to identify opportunities for optimisation, automation and technology-enabled improvement.

- Conduct system, process and technical analysis to identify key components required for solution delivery and problem resolution.
- Design and develop new applications, automations, integrations and enhancements in accordance with technology architecture and engineering standards.

- Perform unit and component testing for new solutions and enhancements.
- Contribute to project planning, estimation, timelines and status updates.
- Communicate technical requirements, solution designs, risks and dependencies clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Identify issues that may impact other areas of a project and resolve or escalate them appropriately.
- Support existing applications and automation solutions through enhancements, troubleshooting and break/fix activities.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts, Systems Analysts, Developers, Solution Designers and other technology partners to ensure solutions meet business, application and performance requirements.

- Follow secure coding practices and applicable security standards to minimise common application vulnerabilities.
- Complete unit and integration testing to ensure solutions meet design specifications and quality standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Technology & Automation
This role is technology-agnostic. Engineers are expected to understand the business problem first and then determine the most appropriate approach.
A solution could involve:
- Traditional software development
- APIs and system integrations
- AI and Large Language Models
- AI-assisted software development
- Workflow automation
- Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
- Low-code technologies
- Data processing and transformation
- A combination of multiple technologies
Our technology landscape may include GPT, Claude, UiPath, Microsoft Power Platform, APIs, SQL, Python and other development technologies.
Candidates are not expected to be specialists in every technology listed. We value engineering fundamentals, adaptability and the ability to learn and select the appropriate technology for the problem.
Employee / Team
- Continuously develop technical knowledge and stay current with AI, software engineering, automation and emerging technologies.
- Develop an understanding of the financial services business and the applications, processes and technology that support it.
- Manage and prioritise workload to deliver quality solutions within agreed timelines.
- Contribute to a positive engineering culture that promotes quality, innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve productivity, effectiveness and operational efficiency.
- Establish effective working relationships across business and technology teams.
- Participate in knowledge sharing, peer reviews and knowledge transfer across the team.
- Be willing to experiment with and learn new technologies where they could provide a better solution to a business problem.
Desired skills
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Approximately 1–3 years’ experience in software engineering, application development, automation or a related technology discipline.
- A good understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including code structure, reusable components, testing, error handling and maintainability.
- Experience with at least one programming or development language, with an ability and willingness to learn others.
- A good understanding of data structures, data manipulation and common data formats.
- An understanding of application integrations and how systems exchange information.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- A keen interest in process optimisation and automation.
- An interest in AI and emerging software-development technologies.
- The ability to evaluate different technical approaches rather than defaulting to a particular platform.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to translate technical concepts into clear business language.
- The confidence to engage with both business stakeholders and technology teams.
- A willingness to work across a broad range of technologies and continually develop new skills.
- Experience within financial services or another regulated environment would be beneficial but is not essential.
