Role Description

This is a contract, on-site Automation Engineer role based in the United Kingdom. The Automation Engineer will design, implement, and maintain automated systems that support mail sorting, parcel processing, and logistics operations.

  • Configuring automation and robotics equipment
  • Monitoring process control systems
  • Diagnosing technical issues
  • Performing corrective and preventive maintenance

The role involves collaborating with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to improve system reliability, throughput, and safety. The Automation Engineer will document technical procedures, support upgrades and new installations, and contribute to continuous improvement activities across Royal Mail’s automated facilities.

Qualifications

  • Automation and Process Control Skills: To configure, optimize, and maintain automated systems and control architectures.
  • Electrical Engineering Skills: To work safely with electrical systems, interpret schematics, and support equipment installations.
  • Robotics and Automation Skills: To integrate, program, and troubleshoot robotic equipment within sorting and handling lines.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: To quickly diagnose faults, perform root cause analysis, and restore equipment to service.
  • Relevant Experience: Industrial automation, logistics, manufacturing, or similar high-throughput environments is beneficial.
  • Knowledge: PLCs, SCADA systems, sensors, drives, and safety systems is advantageous.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work safely in an operational facility.
  • Education: Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related technical field is preferred.
