About The Role

The Automation Engineer role at Amazon TA is pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation of our automated systems across various regional sites within London. This position requires approximately 50% travel between sites, emphasizing the need for flexibility and adaptability. As an Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining key automation equipment, including conveyors, sortation systems, and material handling machinery. Your expertise will help maximize equipment availability and operational uptime, directly impacting the timely delivery of customer orders. You will work closely with the EU Controls network and global colleagues to install, commission, and improve automation systems, leveraging emerging technologies to solve complex productivity challenges. This role offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation within Amazon's logistics operations, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and system enhancements that drive efficiency and safety across our sites.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess a solid foundation in automation and engineering principles, supported by relevant qualifications such as a Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), BTEC National Diploma, NVQ levels III/IV/V in Engineering Manufacture, or equivalent. Experience with PLC-controlled automation systems, troubleshooting in a continuous process environment, and supporting a variety of conveyors and sortation systems is essential. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required to effectively communicate technical information. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office, project management platforms, EPLAN, Ladder Logic programming (from Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys), SCADA platforms like Ignition, HMI systems, fieldbus networks (EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus, AS-i), variable frequency drives (VFDs), safety gateways, and input/output devices. Candidates with a fully accredited apprenticeship and relevant follow-on qualifications will be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing critical automation systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborating with the EU Controls network to analyze MHE metrics, develop data visualizations, and support continuous improvement projects.
  • Documenting systems accurately and maintaining robust backup libraries to ensure system integrity and quick recovery in case of issues.
  • Working alongside global teams to install and commission new equipment, interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, and develop strategies for code improvements aligned with IEC 61131-3 standards.
  • Supporting other sites within the EU Controls network as needed, providing technical guidance and sharing best practices across the organization.
  • Leading or participating in projects aimed at enhancing system reliability, safety, and efficiency, contributing to Amazon's commitment to operational excellence.
