Automation Engineer

Location: North West

Salary: Competitive

Employment Type: Permanent

Working Pattern: On-site

We are looking for experienced Automation Engineers to join the Engineering team at a large, highly automated distribution and logistics facility in the North West.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on keeping automated equipment operating safely, reliably, and efficiently. You’ll be responsible for planned preventative maintenance, responding to breakdowns, diagnosing faults, and supporting improvements that maximize equipment availability and reduce downtime.

The site operates a wide range of automated material-handling equipment, including conveyors, sortation systems, elevators, spiral conveyors, and automated garment-handling systems. You’ll work across electrical, mechanical, and control systems, providing technical support and resolving issues quickly to keep the operation running.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on automated equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and PLC/control faults.
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimize downtime and maintain equipment availability.
  • Monitor equipment condition and identify potential failures.
  • Complete maintenance records accurately using the CMMS.
  • Investigate recurring faults and carry out root cause analysis.
  • Identify and implement improvements to equipment reliability and performance.
  • Support engineering projects, upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work with internal teams, OEMs, contractors, and suppliers where required.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with relevant health, safety, and quality standards.

About You

We’re looking for a Maintenance or Automation Engineer with experience working with automated equipment or machinery. You’ll be confident fault-finding, solving problems, and working in a fast-paced environment where minimizing downtime is key.

Essential:

  • Level 3 qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous maintenance engineering experience.
  • Electrical and/or mechanical fault-finding experience.
  • PLC fault-finding experience.
  • Understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team.

Desirable:

  • Experience in an automated warehouse, distribution, or logistics environment.
  • CMMS experience.
  • 18th Edition Electrical qualification.
  • HNC/HND in Engineering.
  • IOSH or Lean/Continuous Improvement experience.
