Affinity Water are looking for a Automation Test Engineer to join our Technology & Transformation Team in Hatfield.
The Role:
As a Automation Test Engineer, you will join our Test team working on a significant customer transformation programme in the water/utility sector. The programme involves digitalising core customer systems including CIS, billing platforms, and customer-facing digital channels. With quality assurance central to its success.
What you'll be doing:
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test scripts using Playwright and JavaScript/TypeScript for end-to-end, regression, and functional scenarios.
- Build reusable, modular test components; maintain and adapt existing regression suites as the application evolves, managing source control via Bitbucket.
- Automate end-to-end customer lifecycle journeys including account set-up, service transfers, billing runs, payment processing, and debt management.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket Pipelines) for fast, reliable feedback; triage failures, maintain healthy regression suites, and prepare clear test/defect reports for technical and non-technical stakeholders; log and track defects in JIRA.
- Collaborate with developers, BA’s, product owners, and architects to translate requirements into risk-based test scenarios; participate in Agile ceremonies; document frameworks and best practices; champion shift-left testing and quality culture across the programme.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
