Avionics Systems Engineer
UK Aerospace & Defence £40,000-£60,000 + Benefits Permanent
We are looking for an experienced Avionics Systems Engineer to join a growing aerospace engineering team, supporting the design, integration, modification and certification of aircraft avionics systems.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer with experience in aerospace, aviation, defence or aircraft systems to work on complex aircraft programmes and develop their career within a highly technical engineering environment.
The Role
As an Avionics Systems Engineer, you will work closely with customer engineering teams and multidisciplinary specialists to develop and deliver avionics system solutions for aircraft modification and integration programmes.
You will be involved across the engineering lifecycle, from requirements definition and system architecture through to detailed design, integration, verification, certification and aircraft testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop avionics systems and aircraft modifications.
- Support the development of avionics system architectures and interfaces.
- Produce and review system schematics, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.
- Develop and manage system requirements, specifications and technical documentation.
- Perform system-level analysis and support integration activities.
- Produce engineering reports, certification documentation and test schedules.
- Support system verification and validation activities.
- Review OEM Service Bulletins, vendor data and STC installation packages.
- Support aircraft installation and modification activities.
- Provide technical support during ground, flight and EMC testing.
- Investigate technical issues and develop effective engineering solutions.
- Participate in technical and design reviews with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Liaise with suppliers and avionics equipment manufacturers.
- Support airworthiness and certification activities within a regulated aerospace environment.
- Ensure engineering activities are delivered to the required technical, quality and programme standards.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and technical capability.

About You
We are looking for an enthusiastic and technically capable Avionics Systems Engineer who is keen to develop their expertise and take on increasing responsibility within aerospace engineering.
You will ideally have:
- A degree, HND/HNC or equivalent qualification in Avionics, Aerospace, Electrical or Systems Engineering.
- Experience working with aircraft avionics or electronic systems.
- Understanding of aircraft avionics architecture and system integration.
- Experience working with system requirements, specifications and interfaces.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics and engineering drawings.
- Experience producing technical reports and engineering documentation.
- Understanding of aircraft airworthiness and certification processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- A proactive and delivery-focused approach.
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- Aircraft modification and integration.
- Part 21J / Design Organisation environments.
- Avionics installation design.
- Mission systems.
- Communication, navigation or surveillance systems.
- Flight management or cockpit systems.
- Defensive aids / electronic warfare systems.
- Displays and controls.
- Data buses and aircraft communications.
- ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, CAN or Ethernet-based systems.
- DO-160 environmental qualification.
- DO-178 / DO-254 environments.
- ARP4754A / ARP4761.
- Aircraft ground and flight testing.
- EMC testing and certification.
- Military and/or commercial aircraft programmes.
