About Field Dynamics

Field Dynamics builds SaaS and consultancy products that help organisations plan and deliver the infrastructure the UK needs for a Net Zero future.

Our award-winning tools are used by local authorities, energy networks and charge point operators across the UK. They answer questions that are genuinely hard to answer: where the next public charge points should go, how electrified heat will change demand on a distribution network, which parts of the grid come under pressure first and when. Our consultancy team turns the same data into forecasts, models and investment cases.

Those tools run on a platform that brings together a wide range of data, some of it proprietary and internal, some of it supplied by clients, some of it open, and surfaces the resulting insight through a series of interactive digital applications. As the client base and the data footprint grow, so does the back-end development and integration work that keeps it all connected.

We are recruiting a Backend Developer to take that work on.

Role Details

  • Job title: Backend Developer (Java)
  • Reports to: Principal Full Stack Software Engineer
  • Location: Remote, UK based, occasional travel for internal team meet ups
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Salary: Competitive + Pension + Company Bonus
  • Team: Engineering team, working alongside data and modelling colleagues

The Role

You will support the engineering team with back-end development and integration work across our SaaS platform. This includes building and maintaining the services, APIs and data pipelines that connect our systems with internal applications and databases and client data sources.

Our multi-tenanted back end is built in Java and hosted on Azure, with PostgreSQL as our primary data store. You will work with the wider development team to design, build and support integrations that stay reliable as our client base and data volumes grow, and to turn data and business requirements into working back-end services.

There is a lot of it to do. Every new client arrives with data in a shape we have not seen before, and every new product feature needs services behind it, so the work has a direct and visible effect on what customers get. This is a senior, hands-on role. We are looking for someone with solid commercial experience who can pick up our codebase quickly and start contributing with minimal ramp-up time, with room to own technical decisions on their own pieces of work and the most complex or architectural decisions escalated to our Principal Full Stack Software Engineer.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain robust, scalable backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following industry best practices.
  • Write unit and integration tests using JUnit, Mockito, or similar frameworks.
  • Work with relational and/or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.
  • Develop and support integrations between our platform and external client, partner and data systems.
  • Write and optimise SQL against PostgreSQL, including schema design, queries and performance tuning.
  • Deploy, monitor and support backend services hosted on Azure.
  • Work with the development and data teams to translate requirements into working backend functionality.
  • Diagnose and resolve integration and data issues across the back end and any connected pipelines.
  • Contribute to code review, testing and documentation as the back end grows.
  • Work with CI/CD pipelines and cloud/container technologies where applicable.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers, QA engineers, DevOps, product managers, and other stakeholders.

What We Are Looking For

5.1 Essential

5.1.1 Java and Spring

  • Java 17+: Strong proficiency with 5 to 7 years of hands-on experience.
  • Strong understanding of exception handling, multithreading, collections, and Java fundamentals.
  • REST API Development & Native SQL: Strong proficiency in developing RESTful APIs using native SQL, with 5 to 7 years of hands-on experience.
  • Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA & REST APIs: Hands-on experience with 3 to 5 years of practical development experience.

5.1.2 Database

  • Databases (Relational & NoSQL): Hands-on experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc., with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong practical hands-on experience of PostgreSQL and SQL, including input to data architecture design, writing and optimising complex queries, indexing and diagnosing performance issues. At least 5 years’ experience.

5.1.3 Ways of Working

  • Able to pick up an existing codebase and start contributing quickly, without extensive ramp-up time.
  • Ability to work directly with technical and non-technical colleagues to translate data or business requirements into working back-end functionality.
  • Ability to work independently on well-defined pieces of work, escalating architectural or design decisions to the Principal Full Stack Software Engineer.
  • Good debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of secure coding practices, including handling credentials, authentication and sensitive data appropriately when integrating with external systems.
  • A relevant degree in computer science, software engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

5.2 Desirable

None of the following is a barrier to applying, but experience in these additional areas would be of benefit

5.2.1 Java and Spring

  • Good understanding of microservices architecture.
  • Unit Testing: Hands-on experience with unit testing, with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with Source control and package tools Maven/Gradle.
  • Experience deploying, configuring and supporting production services on Azure, such as Azure App Service, Azure Functions or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Hibernate/JPA: Hands-on experience with Hibernate and JPA, with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.

5.2.2 Frameworks and Tooling

  • Experience designing event-driven or message-based integrations like Apache Kafka.
  • Experience writing integration and end-to-end tests, alongside unit tests.
  • Understanding and implementation of OAuth2/JWT and application security.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining integrations between systems, such as REST APIs, file-based data feeds, webhooks or scheduled data exchanges with external clients and partners, with 2 to 4 years of relevant experience.

5.2.3 Azure and Platform

  • Experience with Azure Data Factory or another data pipeline or orchestration tool.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps or CI/CD tools such as Bitbucket CI/CD.
  • Experience with containerisation using Docker, and container orchestration using Kubernetes or Azure Kubernetes Service.

5.2.4 Data and Integration

  • Experience building or maintaining ETL or data pipeline processes.
  • Experience integrating with third-party or client-supplied data feeds, including APIs, SFTP and file-based imports.
  • Comfort working with geospatial data or GIS outputs.
  • Advanced Postgres environment planning such as pooling, load balancing, partitioning etc.

5.2.5 Sector and Ways of Working

  • Experience in energy, infrastructure or another data-heavy SaaS environment.
  • Experience working in an agile team, including sprint planning, code review and mentoring less experienced developers.
