Senior Backend Engineer

£50K – £60K • Residents of Northern Ireland only.

Niice (niice.com) is a Brand Portal for creative delivery, used by global brands like Fox Entertainment, T-Mobile, and GXO to share toolkits and other creative assets with their complex partner networks.

We're a proudly bootstrapped, remote-first company based in Northern Ireland. We're a small team that cares about craft, ships work we're proud of, and moves fast without unnecessary process. This role is a chance to have real ownership and bring genuine expertise to a product used by some of the world's most creative companies.

The Role

We're looking for a senior backend engineer to join our small product team, someone who knows more than we do and isn't shy about it.

You'll take ownership of the backend: the architecture, the infrastructure, the reliability, and the security of the platform. You'll be the person the team turns to when something is hard, and you'll help us make better long-term decisions about how we build. We're not looking for someone to manage, we're looking for someone to lead by doing.

You'll work closely with our existing developers and bring a level of maturity to our infrastructure and architecture that we're genuinely excited about.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Taking ownership of backend architecture, API design, and infrastructure decisions
  • Identifying and addressing performance, scalability, and security concerns across the platform
  • Working with Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and AWS (Lambda, S3, and beyond)
  • Leading on DevOps practices: CI/CD pipelines, deployment reliability, monitoring
  • Driving improvements to code quality, review standards, and engineering practices
  • Mentoring developers on the team and contributing to a stronger engineering culture
  • Being the person who spots problems before they become incidents

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What We're Looking For

You'll need:

  • 5+ years of backend or full stack development, with a strong backend specialism
  • Deep experience with Node.js and TypeScript
  • Proven track record working with cloud infrastructure, AWS in particular (Lambda, RDS, S3, IAM, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of security fundamentals: auth, permissions, data integrity, secure API design
  • Experience designing and scaling relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, DevOps practices, and production reliability
  • Comfortable leading technical decisions and explaining them clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • A natural collaborator. You don't need to be a manager, but you make the people around you better

Nice to have:

  • Experience with real-time systems, CRDTs, or collaborative data models
  • Background with serverless and event-driven architectures
  • Exposure to file handling, media processing, or asset management at scale
  • Experience working in small product teams or startups where you wore multiple hats
  • Any interest in developer tooling, observability, or platform engineering
