Back End Engineer (GoLang)

Location: Hybrid, Central London (1 day in the office every 2 weeks)
Salary: Circa £75,000 + Benefits

An established digital technology business is seeking a talented Back End Engineer to join its growing engineering team. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, building and maintaining scalable backend systems that support high-volume digital products used by millions of users. This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about backend development, distributed systems and modern software engineering practices, with strong commercial experience in GoLang being the primary requirement.

The Role

The Back End Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining robust, high-performance backend services and APIs. Working closely with product, engineering and leadership teams, they will help deliver new features, improve system reliability and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the platform architecture.

The engineering team embraces modern development practices, including AI-assisted development and specification-driven engineering, enabling engineers to focus on delivering quality solutions at speed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain scalable backend applications using GoLang.
  • Build and enhance RESTful APIs and microservices that support core platform functionality.
  • Contribute to system architecture and technical design decisions.
  • Optimise application performance, reliability and scalability.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code following engineering best practices.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain automated testing solutions to ensure platform stability.
  • Support deployment, monitoring and ongoing performance improvements across backend systems.

Required Experience

  • Strong commercial experience developing applications in GoLang.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Experience designing and working within microservices-based architectures.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering principles and design patterns.
  • Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Knowledge of gRPC and service-to-service communication.
  • Experience with Git and modern version control practices.
  • Experience working with containerisation technologies and deployment tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative engineering environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure to AI-assisted development, agentic engineering or specification-driven development.
  • Experience operating applications within cloud-based environments.
  • Knowledge of high-traffic, consumer-facing digital platforms.
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
