Backend Engineer

Annaizu is looking for a results driven Backend Engineer to help build, maintain and scale the technology behind our platform. You will work across backend applications, APIs, databases and integrations, helping us deliver secure, reliable and high performing systems that support businesses with workforce management, compliance and related processes. We are looking for someone who takes ownership, solves problems practically and cares about building clean, scalable software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain scalable backend applications and RESTful APIs
  • Build secure, reliable and high performance backend systems
  • Translate business and technical requirements into practical software solutions
  • Develop and optimise database schemas, queries and data workflows using MySQL
  • Implement authentication, authorisation, validation and application security best practices
  • Identify and resolve performance, scalability and production issues
  • Write clean, maintainable and testable code following agreed development standards
  • Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD workflows for development and deployment
  • Work closely with frontend developers, QA, product teams and other stakeholders
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, system design and architectural decisions
  • Support projects across the full development lifecycle from requirements and development through deployment and production support
  • Monitor and continuously improve application performance, reliability and scalability

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong professional backend development experience
  • Strong proficiency in PHP
  • Hands on experience with Laravel and/or Yii2
  • Strong knowledge of MySQL and relational database design
  • Experience building and integrating RESTful APIs
  • Good understanding of software architecture, design patterns and clean code principles
  • Experience with automated testing, debugging and troubleshooting
  • Practical experience with Git and CI/CD workflows
  • Strong understanding of application security and secure data handling
  • Experience improving backend performance and scalability
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experience working across the full software development lifecycle

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is proactive and comfortable taking ownership of technical challenges. You should have strong attention to code quality, security, performance and reliability, while being able to work independently and collaborate effectively with the wider team. You should also be comfortable learning, challenging existing processes and looking for better ways to build and scale our systems.

Salary

£50,000 to £60,000 per annum, depending on experience and technical expertise.
