Backend Engineer - Node.js / eCommerce

Manchester | £55,000 - £70,000 + bonus
4 days on site per week

I'm working with a rapidly growing online retail business looking for a backend-focused Node.js Engineer to help build the systems and integrations behind a high-volume eCommerce operation. This isn't a front-end JavaScript role.

About the Role

The focus is on the technology that sits behind the storefront: APIs, order flows, third-party integrations, logistics, fulfilment, payments, CRM/ERP and the wider systems required to run and scale an eCommerce business.

You'll be working primarily with Node.js / TypeScript, building backend services and integrations and helping improve the architecture as the business continues to grow.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Ideal Candidate

You'll ideally have:

  • Strong commercial Node.js / TypeScript backend experience
  • Experience designing and building APIs and system integrations
  • Experience working within eCommerce, retail or another high-volume transactional environment
  • AWS / serverless experience
  • Experience integrating third-party platforms and operational systems
  • Strong understanding of databases and data flows
  • Experience with Shopify / Shopify Plus would be a major advantage, particularly if you've worked on backend integrations rather than purely themes and storefront development.

Preferred Experience

I'd also be particularly interested in experience integrating eCommerce platforms with:

  • OMS / warehouse / fulfilment systems
  • Courier and logistics platforms
  • ERP / CRM platforms
  • Payment providers
  • Inventory systems

You don't need to be a Shopify specialist. The priority is strong backend engineering, with eCommerce domain knowledge being the differentiator.

If you're a backend Node.js engineer who understands what happens behind the checkout, I'd be keen to hear from you.
