Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js, DevOps, AI/LLMs)

I'm currently partnering with a well-funded health technology business that is building innovative digital products at the intersection of healthcare, software engineering, and artificial intelligence. They are looking for a highly capable Senior Backend Engineer to join a small, high-performing team and play a key role in designing, building, and scaling cloud-native backend systems and AI-powered digital products.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Designing, building, deploying, and maintaining scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and modern backend frameworks
  • Developing robust RESTful APIs and microservices to support customer-facing applications and AI-powered features
  • Collaborating closely with product, engineering, and commercial stakeholders to deliver high-quality software from concept through to production
  • Making extensive use of Large Language Models and AI development tools to accelerate engineering, while applying sound technical judgement to review, optimise, and maintain generated code
  • Building and maintaining cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code and modern DevOps practices
  • Designing and managing CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, reliable, and secure software delivery
  • Deploying and operating containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes (or similar orchestration platforms)
  • Monitoring production systems, improving observability, and ensuring high availability, performance, and security
  • Integrating third-party AI services and developing backend functionality powered by Large Language Models and AI agents
  • Contributing to backend architecture, engineering standards, security, and platform scalability
  • Helping shape the technical roadmap as the company expands its platform capabilities

What They're Looking For

  • Strong commercial experience as a Backend or Full Stack Engineer with a primary focus on Node.js
  • Expert-level Node.js, JavaScript, and TypeScript experience
  • Strong experience designing and building scalable APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native applications
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Strong DevOps experience, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar), and cloud deployments
  • Experience working with modern databases, including SQL and NoSQL technologies
  • Hands-on experience working with AI technologies, including Large Language Models, AI agents, prompt engineering, or related tooling
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, security, and maintainable engineering practices
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, product-focused environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work remotely within a distributed team
  • High levels of ownership, initiative, and a proactive approach to problem-solving

Preferred Background

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline
  • Strong academic pedigree, ideally from a leading university
  • Experience working within high-growth technology businesses, venture-backed startups, or product-led software companies
  • Experience with serverless architectures, event-driven systems, or message queues would be advantageous
  • Exposure to healthcare, health tech, or regulated environments would be beneficial but is not essential
