Backend Engineer – Enterprise AI Platform
£800/day (via umbrella)
2-3 year programme
Manchester / Leeds / Bristol / Birmingham / Edinburgh - 2 days/week
We are looking for a Backend Engineer to develop the integration and orchestration services underpinning a greenfield Enterprise Knowledge Base. The platform will securely connect systems and data sources from across a retail bank and enable conversational AI, knowledge retrieval and AI-agent workflows.
The role is expected to be approximately 80% Python and 20% Java. Frontend development is not required.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain backend services, primarily using Python with supporting Java development.
- Develop secure and scalable REST APIs connecting enterprise systems, data pipelines and AI services.
- Build microservices supporting orchestration, workflow automation and knowledge retrieval.
- Integrate GCP and Vertex AI services into the wider platform.
- Develop event-driven integrations using Kafka or comparable messaging technologies.
- Implement secure authentication and authorisation using OAuth, SAML and SSO.
- Deploy cloud-native services using containers and Kubernetes/GKE.
- Build and maintain automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
- Implement monitoring, logging, alerting and operational observability.
- Contribute to technical spikes, architecture discussions and engineering standards.
- Work closely with AI engineers, data engineers, architects and security teams.

Essential experience
- Strong hands-on Python backend engineering.
- Commercial Java development experience.
- Microservices and distributed-systems architecture.
- REST API design and enterprise-system integration.
- GCP and cloud-native application development.
- Containerisation and Kubernetes.
- CI/CD, automated testing and Git.
- Ability to write clean, logical and optimised production code.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

Desirable experience
- GKE, GCS and Vertex AI integration.
- Kafka, Pub/Sub or event-driven architecture.
- OAuth, SAML, SSO and API gateways.
- AI-platform or AI-agent orchestration experience.
- Enterprise Knowledge Bases or enterprise-search platforms.
- High-availability and regulated-enterprise environments.
- Banking, fintech or consulting experience.
