Development Role in Back Office Java Services at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe
Overview
This is a Development role in the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of services that support the Back Office at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe.
About the Role
The role is in the Back Office Java Services team which is responsible for a range of applications across business domains and user groups in the bank. The role involves routine interaction with the relevant business teams to understand their requirements and to design and implement solutions to service their needs and support the overall business process.
Responsibilities
- Pro-actively communicating with both IT and business stakeholders across a range of seniority, and preparedness to undertake some business analysis of issues and requirements.
The team provides key services supporting Post Trade functions within Daiwa: Finance, Operations, Product Control, Regulatory Reporting, Reference Data, Pricing, Management Reporting, and Compliance amongst others. The team is responsible for several strategic systems that contribute to the Bank’s overall technical architecture.
The firm is in the middle of a transition programme to cloud, with existing systems and services being migrated onto AWS as part of a larger shift towards a cloud-first model. The role will consider and champion cloud-first solutions for new business and technology demands.
Principal Duties
- Deliver software solutions against prioritised business and regulatory demands, and within mandated timelines
- Develop and maintain high-quality, readable, and maintainable code adhering to industry best practices and coding standards, with comprehensive unit, integration, and regression testing to minimise defects and ensure the software remains scalable and easy to enhance over time
- Engagement with technology and business management for Technology Change, including use of the Back Office Front Door Process to ensure documented business requirements inform efficient Technology delivery
- Independently execute projects with a well-defined technical and business strategy, all the way through to showing positive business outcomes (reliable, in production, monitored, with adoption etc.), not claiming victory at code completion
- Ensure the what, why and how of projects and deliverables from the team are documented, including dependencies and technical complexities at the right level for the audience, and challenge change requestors where there is any ambiguity or clarification is required
- Ensure engineering stack and process knowledge is documented, discoverable and reviewed periodically to maintain accuracy and reduce key person dependencies
- Provide support for the business as required, aligning with Technology priorities and ensuring optimum application and service availability and resiliency

Skills & Experience
Essential
- Substantial enterprise Java development experience in a complex, business-critical environment.
- Strong core Java, object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and clean-code practices.
- Hands-on experience building backend services, RESTful APIs, and integration components, ideally using Spring/Spring Boot and related enterprise Java frameworks.
- Strong SQL and relational database skills, including investigation, reconciliation, performance-aware query writing, and issue resolution.
- Experience with automated testing, including unit, integration, regression, and component testing using common Java testing tools and practices.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, source control, build tools, and delivery tooling such as Git, Maven/Gradle, Jenkins, or equivalent.
- AWS or cloud migration experience, including cloud-ready design, containerisation, Docker, infrastructure-as-code concepts, and operational resilience.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work across code, data, logs, interfaces, and business process flows.
- Ability to translate business requirements into technical designs, user stories, acceptance criteria, and deliverable software changes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with confidence working across business, technology, vendor, and project teams.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum or iterative delivery environments with Jira or equivalent tooling.
- Self-starter with strong ownership, delivery focus, and willingness to support business-critical services through analysis, build, test, release, and early-life support.

Desirable
- Experience within investment banking, capital markets, derivatives, treasury, risk, finance, operations, settlements, or regulatory reporting environments.
- Experience with PostgreSQL/Aurora, JPA/Hibernate, Spring Security, asynchronous processing, messaging platforms, monitoring, and observability tooling.
- Experience supporting cloud migration, AWS ECS, RDS, S3, Lambda, Terraform, Docker, or equivalent container and infrastructure tooling.
- Frontend development awareness using Angular, Bootstrap, or similar JavaScript frameworks where required for internal tooling or support applications.
- Awareness of AI-enabled software development practices, including responsible use of coding assistants, specification-led development, and maintainable documentation.
Qualifications
- Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering, or equivalent academic/professional background.
- Relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of a formal degree where the candidate can demonstrate strong enterprise software engineering capability.
- AWS, Java, Agile, DevOps, or financial services technology certifications would be advantageous but are not mandatory.
