About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Backend Developer with expertise in Python to join a high-performing engineering team within a prominent tier 1 bank. This role is based in London with a hybrid working model, offering a dynamic environment focused on building, modernizing, and supporting highly distributed, business-critical backend systems. The successful candidate will play a vital role in enhancing the bank’s technological infrastructure, ensuring system reliability, scalability, and performance in a fast-paced financial services environment. This position is initially for six months, with the possibility of extension, and offers an inside IR35 contractual arrangement.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in Python backend development within a financial or banking environment.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and database development, including designing and optimizing complex queries.
- Hands-on experience with microservices architecture and event-driven systems.
- Knowledge of Kafka, Tibco, or similar messaging systems.
- Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing frameworks.
- Familiarity with container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Prometheus and Grafana.
- Ability to provide production support, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions efficiently.
- Agile delivery experience, working within Scrum or Kanban methodologies.

Desirable qualifications include prior experience in financial services or capital markets, familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices, legacy system modernization skills, and supporting critical production platforms.
Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, and maintain backend systems using Python, ensuring high performance and scalability.
- Design and implement microservices and event-driven architectures to support business requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical specifications and deliver solutions aligned with business goals.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to uphold code quality and system integrity.
- Support and troubleshoot live production systems, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
- Implement automation and CI/CD pipelines to streamline deployment processes and improve efficiency.
- Monitor system health and performance metrics, utilizing tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
- Engage in Agile practices, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, to ensure timely delivery of features.
- Stay updated with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements relevant to financial systems.
