About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Developer with expertise in Python to join our client's dynamic engineering team. This is a six-month contract position based in London, offering a hybrid work environment that balances remote flexibility with onsite collaboration. The role is inside IR35, and the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, modernizing, and maintaining highly distributed, business-critical backend systems within a global financial services setting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in banking and financial services, with a proven track record of delivering robust backend solutions in complex environments. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work on innovative projects within a prestigious tier 1 bank, contributing to the modernization of core banking systems and supporting critical operational platforms.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in Python backend development, with a strong understanding of best coding practices and system design.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and database development, including schema design, optimization, and query tuning.
- Hands-on experience with microservices architecture and event-driven systems.
- Familiarity with Kafka, Tibco, or similar messaging platforms.
- Knowledge of Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing frameworks.
- Experience working with container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes and OpenShift.
- Monitoring and alerting experience using Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent tools.
- Strong background in production support, troubleshooting, and incident resolution.
- Agile delivery experience, with a focus on iterative development and continuous improvement.

Desirable qualifications include experience within financial services or capital markets, familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices, legacy system modernization skills, and experience supporting critical production platforms.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems primarily using Python, ensuring high performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Modernize existing legacy systems by implementing new architectures, frameworks, and best practices.
- Build and support microservices-based applications, ensuring seamless integration and communication via messaging platforms like Kafka or Tibco.
- Implement automated testing strategies to ensure code quality, security, and system stability.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and agile ceremonies to promote best practices and continuous improvement.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement fixes to minimize downtime and optimize efficiency.
- Support production environments by providing timely incident response and resolution.
- Contribute to DevOps initiatives, including CI/CD pipeline development, infrastructure as code, and environment automation.
