About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Backend Developer with strong expertise in Python to join a high-performing engineering team within a tier 1 banking environment. This is a 6-month contract position based in London, offering a hybrid work model that combines remote and on-site collaboration. The role involves developing, modernizing, and supporting critical backend systems that are highly distributed and essential to the bank's operations. The successful candidate will play a vital role in building robust, scalable, and efficient backend solutions that meet the rigorous demands of a global financial services organization. This position requires a hands-on engineer with a keen eye for code quality, testing, and system reliability, capable of working in an agile environment to deliver innovative solutions.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in Python backend development within a financial or banking environment.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and database development, with the ability to optimize complex queries and manage large datasets.
  • Experience working with microservices architecture and event-driven systems.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Kafka, Tibco, or similar messaging platforms.
  • Familiarity with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing frameworks.
  • Experience with container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes and OpenShift.
  • Knowledge of monitoring tools like Prometheus and Grafana for system health and performance tracking.
  • Experience in production support, troubleshooting, and incident management.
  • Agile delivery experience, with a focus on continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD).

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality backend systems using Python, ensuring scalability and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Modernize existing legacy systems by implementing new technologies and architectures.
  • Build and support microservices and event-driven architectures to facilitate real-time data processing and integration.
  • Implement automated testing and TDD practices to ensure code quality and reliability.
  • Deploy applications using Kubernetes or OpenShift, managing containerized environments efficiently.
  • Monitor system performance using Prometheus, Grafana, or similar tools, and proactively address issues.
  • Provide production support, troubleshooting, and incident resolution to minimize system downtime.
  • Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, contributing to sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing within the team to promote best practices and continuous improvement.
