I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Candidates should possess solid knowledge of relational databases like Postgres or MySQL, along with familiarity with NoSQL stores such as Redis or Elasticsearch. Experience working with distributed systems, queues, event-driven architectures, and performance optimisation is highly desirable. Hands-on experience deploying services using CI/CD pipelines, containers (Docker/Kubernetes), and cloud infrastructure is required. Responsibilities

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own critical backend domains, designing, building, and maintaining scalable and secure services and APIs that support millions of users worldwide. Your responsibilities include translating complex product requirements into clear technical plans and leading the delivery of multi-sprint initiatives. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential to ensure seamless end-to-end feature development. You will contribute to product discovery by prototyping, validating feasibility, and surfacing trade-offs early in the development process. Improving system observability, reliability, and operational standards will be a core focus, alongside driving best practices in performance tuning, database design, and security. Writing clean, well-tested code, maintaining high standards across CI/CD pipelines, and mentoring junior engineers are integral parts of your role.
