Backend Engineer
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer based in United Kingdom.
Join a small, ambitious product team building technology that helps hundreds of thousands of users better understand and manage their finances.
You’ll play a key role in developing the central API and backend services that power data, calculations, and core product experiences.
The role is primarily focused on Node.js and TypeScript, with a strong emphasis on API design, data modeling, performance, and developer experience.
You’ll take ownership of backend systems as products in their own right, ensuring they remain intuitive, reliable, scalable, and fast.
Your work will span both scaling established products and rapidly validating new ideas through MVPs and experiments.
You’ll collaborate closely with frontend, design, and product colleagues in a fully remote, asynchronous, and flexible environment.
This is an opportunity to have substantial technical ownership while helping shape both the engineering foundations and the future direction of a growing product.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and maintain the central API and backend services, primarily using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Build fast, efficient services that reliably deliver data and calculations while providing an excellent developer experience for client developers.
- Design intuitive APIs and elegant data models that abstract complexity for internal developers and end users.
- Scale backend systems and infrastructure supporting existing products while maintaining reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Help develop and validate new products, services, and ideas through rapid MVPs and technical experimentation.
- Treat the internal API as a product, taking ownership of its stability, usability, performance, and continued evolution.
- Debug and resolve production issues across the technology stack, staying close to the product and ensuring a robust technical foundation.
- Continuously improve engineering standards, tooling, development processes, and technical practices.
- Build scalable solutions that consistently meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Work closely with frontend, design, and product teams to deliver projects ranging from focused improvements to large-scale initiatives.
- Take end-to-end ownership of projects, coordinating across technologies, services, and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
