Backend Engineer
Are you a backend specialist eager to build modern, cloud-native services that power real-world products rather than maintaining legacy systems?
RMG, a specialist technology recruiting agency, is representing an innovative insurance technology business that is reshaping the automotive insurance space. By integrating telematics, driver behaviour data, and machine learning models, they have created an intelligent underwriting platform delivering remarkable efficiency and precision. We are seeking a talented Backend Engineer for a full-time, permanent role to help craft the next generation of their core platform. This position offers fully remote working across the United Kingdom, supplemented by monthly in-person team meet-ups and access to an optional London co-working space. Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain resilient, high-throughput backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Build and evolve robust APIs and integrations supporting core insurance features, mobile applications, and machine learning workflows.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering colleagues in an Agile framework to deliver impactful features.
- Contribute actively to distributed system architecture, technical design, and clean code standards.
- Own services end-to-end, taking accountability for reliability, observability, operational health, and continuous performance tuning.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
