About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Backend Java Developer to join a large-scale digital transformation programme within the Public Sector. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that enhance public services through innovative technology solutions. As a key member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend Java applications and services. You will take ownership of complex development activities, ensuring the delivery of scalable, secure, and efficient solutions that meet the project’s requirements. The position involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, providing technical guidance where necessary, and supporting the continuous improvement of development practices within the team.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in Java development with proven experience in enterprise application design. A background in working within Agile environments and familiarity with modern software engineering principles are essential. Candidates should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. For senior-level roles, experience in mentoring junior developers and providing technical leadership is highly desirable. Relevant qualifications include a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, along with professional certifications in Java or related technologies.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality backend Java applications and services that align with project specifications and architectural standards.
- Apply strong software engineering principles to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that support the organisation’s digital transformation goals.
- Work independently on varied and complex development tasks within a large and dynamic technology environment, ensuring timely delivery and high standards of quality.
- Collaborate effectively with engineering, testing, and wider delivery teams to troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and implement improvements.
- For senior roles, provide technical guidance, mentorship, and code reviews to support the development team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and best practice sharing.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, contribute to technical documentation, and assist in defining technical strategies and standards.

Benefits
This role offers a competitive daily rate ranging from £280 to £400, inside IR35, reflecting the level of expertise and experience. The position is based on a hybrid working model, with locations available in London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Manchester, providing flexibility and work-life balance. Working within the public sector, you will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that impact society positively.
