About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Backend Java Developer to join a large-scale digital transformation programme within the Public Sector. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that impact public services and community welfare. As a key member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend Java applications and services. The position requires a proactive individual who can take ownership of complex development activities, provide technical guidance, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Your expertise will help ensure the delivery of scalable, secure, and high-quality solutions that meet the strategic objectives of the programme.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess strong commercial experience as a Backend Java Developer, with a proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-scale Java applications. A solid understanding of software engineering principles, clean coding practices, and development best practices is essential. Experience with automated testing frameworks and unit testing is required to ensure code quality and reliability. Candidates should demonstrate excellent debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with Agile methodologies and working within multidisciplinary teams is highly desirable. For senior-level roles, experience in mentoring junior developers, providing technical advice, and supporting team growth is necessary. A relevant degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred, along with the ability to obtain UK security clearance or hold an active SC clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality backend Java applications and services aligned with project requirements.
  • Apply strong software engineering principles to create scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that adhere to best practices.
  • Work independently on complex development activities within a large and dynamic technology environment, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, testing, and delivery to troubleshoot issues and implement effective solutions.
  • For senior roles, provide technical leadership by mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, and sharing knowledge to foster continuous improvement.
  • Participate in architectural discussions, technical design sessions, and contribute to the development of technical standards and documentation.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry trends to recommend improvements and innovative solutions.
