Backend Test Automation Engineer (SDET)

Birmingham | Hybrid (2 Days per Week) | Up to £55,000 + Bonus + Share Scheme

Our client is a leading software business trusted by organisations across the UK and internationally. As part of a major shift-left testing initiative, they are looking to hire their first dedicated Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to help drive quality throughout the development lifecycle.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a developer with hands on coding experience and testing exposure (building frameworks) to take on ownership and join a company big on career progression. The plan is to build out the department, leading to an opportunity to manage a team in the future.

The Role

You'll be responsible for building and enhancing automated testing capabilities across backend systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing automated test frameworks
  • Developing test coverage across unit, integration, and API layers
  • Identifying gaps in existing test coverage and proposing improvements
  • Supporting the adoption of shift-left testing practices
  • Collaborating with developers to improve software quality and testability
  • Helping integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines
  • Influencing tooling, frameworks and quality engineering best practices

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
