Balance Sheet Manager

We are supporting a well-established UK building society with the appointment of a Balance Sheet Manager.

This is a key role within the Treasury function, offering the opportunity to work across balance sheet management, capital, liquidity, and interest rate risk.

The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the effective management of the organisation’s balance sheet and associated risks, working closely with senior Treasury, Finance, and wider business stakeholders.

The Role

You will take ownership of a range of balance sheet and Treasury activities, with a particular focus on stress testing, interest rate risk, liquidity, capital, and model risk.

You will also have the opportunity to be involved in Treasury dealing and the ongoing development of the organisation’s balance sheet management framework.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Leading capital and liquidity stress testing, supporting the production of key regulatory and strategic planning documentation.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of capital, liquidity, and balance sheet models.
  • Taking a lead role in customer behavioural analysis, particularly in relation to interest rate risk, liquidity, and capital.
  • Supporting the management and ongoing development of interest rate risk in the banking book (IRRBB).
  • Preparing and contributing to Treasury and risk reporting for senior management and relevant governance committees.
  • Contributing to the development of Treasury risk appetite, policies, and frameworks.
  • Supporting the development and embedding of an effective model risk framework.
  • Acting as a key Treasury dealer, including executing interest rate hedging transactions with relevant counterparties.
  • Supporting the management of the organisation’s interest rate hedging strategy and associated processes.
  • Identifying opportunities to optimise liquidity and balance sheet positioning.
  • Ensuring Treasury activity is conducted in line with relevant internal policies, regulatory requirements, and appropriate risk controls.
  • Working collaboratively across Treasury, Finance, Products, and other areas of the business to improve processes, data, and modelling capability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
