University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Therapies Assistant to join the HIV Therapies Team based at Heartlands Hospital.
In this rewarding role, you will be responsible for managing an agreed caseload, undertaking a range of initial screenings and supporting people living with HIV in an outpatient setting. You will work closely with experienced Dietitians and Occupational Therapists as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, helping to deliver high-quality, person-centred care.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
We are seeking a conscientious, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who enjoys being part of a vibrant team and is passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. The successful candidate will contribute to a friendly and supportive working environment and possess excellent written, verbal and telephone communication skills, enabling them to engage effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Previous experience working within HIV services is not essential; however, a commitment to supporting people living with HIV and a willingness to challenge stigma and promote inclusivity are key requirements of the role.
Applicants must be flexible, the role may include participation in an evening clinic if required. Excellent teamwork, organisational and time management skills are essential.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Sound basic education to GCSE or equivalent including English at grade C or above.
- Evidence of recent education/ personal development
- Educated to A level/NVQ 3 or equivalent (e.g. NVQ 2 or similar vocational qualification plus extensive experience working in a clinical area)
- Care certificate or be willing to work towards this
Experience
Essential
- Relevant therapy/health/clinical experience
- Experience of communicating with and motivating patients who may have communication difficulties
- Evidence of ability to work under own initiative and under minimal supervision
- Experience of carrying out assigned duties after training
Desirable
- Experience of working in a role supporting therapists
- Experience of working with the relevant patient group
Additional Criteria
Essential
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Physical skills and fitness including dexterity and coordination needed for manual handling and treatment of patients
- Basic IT and keyboard skills, knowledge of Excel
- Good organisation and prioritising skills
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the role and the tasks involved
- Able to solve problems and contribute own ideas seeking guidance if necessary
- Can demonstrate a broad understanding of relevant areas of Therapy and the effect of illness / clinical condition / disability on function and health
- Good understanding of the role of a generic therapy assistant
- Broad understanding of working in outpatients and in the context of an acute Trust
- Ability to take responsibility under guidance
- Able to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Know own limitations and role boundaries
- Willingness to learn new skills
- Enthusiasm to work as a therapy assistant
- Good attendance record
- Able to contribute to evening clinic cover and flexible working hours
