Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Therapy Support Worker looking for an opportunity to progress to a band 4 role within the MSK Outpatient Department at Solihull Hospital. The individual will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across a busy and diverse caseload. The postholder supports the MSK physiotherapy team through a combination of advanced clinical support, delegated treatment delivery, service coordination, and patient-focused communication. We are a GIRFT accredited surgical hub and provide specialist trauma and orthopaedic post-discharge rehabilitation to this patient group. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, have excellent communication and time management skills and will work well in a team environment.
The core purpose of the role is to provide skilled clinical and administrative support to the MSK outpatient service, enabling efficient patient flow, safe delivery of delegated interventions, and a consistently positive patient experience. The role requires an experienced support worker with strong MSK knowledge, confidence in independent working, and the ability to contribute to service improvement.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
- Delegated MSK treatment delivery: Implement exercise programmes, supervise rehabilitation sessions, and support functional practice under physiotherapist guidance.
- Clinical assessment support: Assist with outcome measures, mobility checks, gait observation, and preparation of patients for assessment.
- Therapeutic exercise facilitation: Lead small group classes, monitor technique, progress exercises, and provide motivational support.
- Service coordination: Manage patient flow, prepare clinical spaces, organise equipment, and support smooth running of clinics.
- Patient education: Reinforce physiotherapy advice, promote physical activity, and support self-management strategies.
- Clinical documentation: Record delegated interventions accurately in line with trust policy and HCPC/CSP expectations.
- Quality and safety: Maintain infection control standards, escalate concerns, and contribute to safe patient care.
- Equipment management: Ensure therapy equipment is clean, safe, and available for clinical use.
- Team contribution: Participate in MDT discussions, support junior staff, and contribute to service improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
Essential
- Education to GCSE level or equivalent including English and maths at grade C or above.
- Able to demonstrate competence in maths and written and spoken English.
- Educated to A Level / NVQ 4/ BTEC or equivalent (e.g. NVQ 3 or similar vocational qualification PLUS 2 years' experience working in a care setting).
- Care certificate or be willing to work towards this.
Desirable
- Evidence of recent education / personal development related to healthcare.
- Demonstrated has been proactive with continuing professional development.
Experience
Essential
- Comprehensive experience supporting therapists in a relevant clinical setting.
- Comprehensive experience of delivering acute inpatient rehabilitation programmes across a variety of clinical settings with evidence of MDT collaboration and hospital discharge planning.
- Can demonstrate an in-depth understanding of relevant areas of therapy, the effect of illness/clinical conditions / disability on function and health, and basic aims of rehabilitation.
- Comprehensive understanding of the role of therapy support worker in the relevant area.
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection in healthcare.
Desirable
- Experience of communicating with and motivating patients who may have communication difficulties.
- Experience of planning and delivering exercises for individuals and/or groups.
- Good understanding of working environment -- healthcare/NHS/UHB trust/acute care/community as applicable.
Additional Criteria

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Good clinical reasoning skills.
- Confidence to feedback to the multi-disciplinary team in a formal setting and to communicate effectively with a wide variety of other professionals to represent therapies internally and externally.
- Able to communicate information and instructions to patients/carers/relatives who have communication difficulties of English as a second language.
- Evidence of being able to work effectively as part of a team / across teams.
- Physical skills, fitness, dexterity, and coordination needed for manual handling and treatment of patients.
- Good IT and Keyboard skills.
- Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.

- Able to solve problems and contribute own ideas seeking guidance if necessary.
